Stupid rules should be broken.

Public land exists to be used by the public and that includes places too far to walk. A road exists to facilitate this and closing the road denies the public something that they have a right to.

Civil disobedience is our birthright. The guy driving around a locked gate was right. The gate should be destroyed.
This might be the dumbest thing I've seen on rokslide yet....do you believe game laws are made to br disobeyed too to prove your birthright?
The person who drove around the gate was wrong period. If you want to push for a change in management show up to a public meeting or provide comment but simply ignoring rules because they don't suite you isn't patriotic its idiotic.

The original post states that it was a seasonal closure in the spring and the road was wet and muddy. This happens all over the country to prevent roads from getting tore up etc.. A few trips down there could destroy it to the point where it's impassable. Road closures are there for a reason.

Actually, you probably do not know why the road exists. The purpose of the road was determined by the agency that built it. It is possible it was not built for the purpose of accessing the public land so the agency has the right to close said road for reasons they see fit. An interstate that goes through a NF was not built for public assess to that public land. It was build to move people and goods through it. A road built to a remote tower or mine or many other specific things was not built to facilitate access to the public land by the public and that road can be managed as seen fit by the agency that built it. In addition, a road could be built to facilitate access to public land during specific times. Again, the agency that built the road can determine its use. To think that any road put down is then fair game for anyone to use as they wish, when they wish is asinine.

Actually the road I referred to was built for logging operations 20 years ago. Mostly overgrown now

I don't agree that we have the right to drive whatever we want, wherever we want. We need some rules to keep lands from being destroyed and to give animals a place to escape. Do you also think we should be able to drive our atvs wherever we want regardless of there being a road or trail?

Its attitudes like that that get seasonal roads shut down and reclaimed. Pretty much typical of the me first gimme gimmie attitude of someone that dosent take thr time to consider why the road is closed or what the long term repercussions are. The same social disobiance guy is the loudest when those roads get totally shut or tore up to the point they become total impassable.

Makes me wonder why they are part of a backcountry hunting forum when they obviously need a texas wheel chair to get anywhere.

From a political standpoint, I pretty much agree with this, but where it doesn't actually work is that we're talking about destruction of public property. You do have every right to access that land, but you don't have a right to destroy it. It's mine to.

Not sure if I detect sarcasm here, but it's about much more than the roads of course. The type of people that blatantly disregard a closed gate likely disregard other rules and laws. Their OHV stickers were expired and for the wrong State, and based on that I highly doubt they had fishing licenses.
I understand protecting the resource and that folks should follow the rules.

You guys would go nuts down here trying to enforce everything folk do. Guess thats the difference between living where some folks reside and living among the masses - we got 23 million down here.

I regulate myself and not worrying so much about everyone else. If someone is blatantly poaching or deliberately tearing stuff up i’ll make the call. Otherwise, im not there to enforce the rules or to worry if they have a fishing license.

I can see how using a closed road is like a gateway drug, if they disrefard one thing, say speeding on the way there, they are likely to break other laws too.

One thing that really Irks me about road closures is when I'm riding my bike or walking way back
in on one of these closed roads (to protect critical habitat) and a vehicle shows up - AND ITS THE GAME WARDEN. I've had this happen when they were in a truck and also a SxS.
I mean if the road is closed it's closed right? And later, while scouting an area I see the same
tire tracks of said LEO ALL OVER the freaking place, even down fire breaks that arent even roads.
I just cant figure out how their vehicle(s) is less damaging of the habitat than mine.
That said, I have continued to respect the road closures and expect others to do the same.

Administrative use...there are many reasons that the land management agencies and wildlife agencies may be behind those gates for official business.

If you're concerned about it, you could always ask or go to the local FS/BLM/FG office to confirm.

For the record, if you're inferring that it may be for reasons other than official business, I can tell you that anyone working for a federal or state agency violating these closures for personal reasons has more to lose and worry about than a ticket.

Super understandable. But most roads aren't usually closed because of the problems caused by a handful of vehicles - they're closed because of the problems that would be caused by dozens or hundreds of vehicles.

I drive down closed roads for work all the time, and only occasionally have I stopped to think of the impression it leaves. Of course much of the work we do would be next to impossible without vehicle access, and we can control the number of government vehicles going back there more easily than the number of private vehicles that could get back if the gates were all open.
