Our last trip out west we rented a sat phone for communication with wives, emergencies, peace of mind, etc. Rather than keep dropping $150/trip that we never get back, what are some options you guys use where you've purchased a device? We also do remote trips into Ontario fishing on years that we don't elk hunt, so Id say whatever option we go with will be used at least once a year, if not more.

We would prefer to stick with a voice compatible option - Is there a more long term economical option, or should I just continue getting boned by the rental companies?

Really evaluate how important voice is. Inreach are pretty solid if you can just check in with text. That's worked well to smooth over delays and generally check in with the home front in my experience. With the included texts or $0.50 for overages I don't think about using it as long as the recipients understand to consolidate replies into a longer message vs bread crumbs. I just turn my freedom basic plan on/off based on trips (IE its on all fall then off some of the winter and will go back on later summer scouting). I typically use a preset message (free) to ping out I'm fine each night.

No experience with voice options if you NEED that, I believe a decent jump in pricing for that though.

I've been using the Garmin InReach and have been loving its convenience. It gives both me and my SO a nice peace of mind. I don't feel rushed and I can check in and let her know when I'll be late.

But it is text only.
