Recurve ILF Riser Build

following purely bc this has been an awesome thread to watch. Thank you for the progress updates. A video and timeline would be cool to watch next time you build another :)

Absolutely amazing, nice work.

I am dying to know if that will work for you with the ILF limbs mounted on the back side of the riser- I have never seen that done.

IME, the bows that do that- like the Widows- seem to point better though you lose a little bit of performance.
I follow a builder on the ol FB that makes a bunch of them like this. ILF limbs have a bushing that's just press fitted and you can pop it out pretty easily after unscrewing the cap. Believe his business is Rossing archery or something like that.

As for performance, I draw 32-32.5" and used to shoot a BW PMA. Loved the bow, but sometimes you horse trade for reasons you later regret. I figure with the higher performance of some ILF limbs I should be able to easily get into the 175-185fps range with a 9.5-10gpp arrow (more like what guys with a 30" draw can see.

What are you using for your limb bolt inserts and where? The ones I’ve gotten in the past were from Binghams but he closed shop a while ago. I looked on 3rivers and they are a bit proud of those. Cool build! Can’t wait to see the finished product!

I actually just put a couple stainless hex nuts in there. I didn't go into details, but there's almost 1/8" of solid glass between the inserts and the face of the limb pads. By virtue of glueing up the riser in parts I was able to align my limb bolts perfectly via glueing up from the back side with a rubber gasket to keep epoxy from running out the bolt holes.

Oh yeah, I like your logic.

With your DL you have performance to burn....better to focus more on how it points and shootability.

FYI, I've thought about making a riser....then I see a thread like this and all of the work you have done....and then I think, "Naw"

Oh man… been waiting the entire day for the UPS truck to drop off a stain my brother recommended. He makes tobacco pipes for a living (extremely expensive ones at that), and I almost always defer to his design and finish ideas.

Anyways the truck got here an hour ago and I raced to the garage to finish sanding back the seal coat and check for scratches. Popped open the can of stain and went to town. Omg, I’m in love! I had to wipe it back fairly quick cause this stuff is INTENSE.IMG_8895.jpegIMG_8896.jpegIMG_8898.jpeg

I'm curious- What product is that?

I redid a couple wood risers I had in the past- a Blacks Creek and a Dryad. I refinished with multiple coats of poly...then misted a couple coats of Matt poly over it to take away the shine. That mist gives it a slightly textured finish.

You can knock that texture down with some fine steel wool very easily.

@Beendare the finish will be a combination of three products from a small
Company called Sutherland Welles. I’m using a custom sample of their old world concentrated stain in red, their Murdochs Hard Sealer, and will almost certainly top coat with their Murdochs Uralkyd 500 floor finish in gloss(will probably matte it back with sand paper).

Here is the bow with its second coat of hard sealer (been doing a stain/soak/wipe off/sealer soak/wipe off) routine. This coat is probably gonna be the first one that stays on and after it cures enough I’ll flow coat with the same hard sealer for one more round, then I’ll very carefully sand back with something in the 320-400 range before switching to the more durable floor finish.
