This is absolutely the worst attitude we as hunters can have. I don't care how macho you feel if you don't realize that it is non hunters that make most of the laws your an idiot. As hunters we have to take the moral high road. Many, if not most, non hunters understand hunting's place in our world. However, it only takes one idiot to change their mind and turn them against hunting. It is unfortunate but posting pics of exotics like a giraffe are the instances that turn open minded non hunters to anti-hunters. That's just the way it is. You can attack them all you want but that does not change the facts. And once we turn them because we posted a pic of "wtf we want" they become the majority against us and we lose.

Social media is the best and worst thing on the internet. I rubbished it for a long time, until I couldn't get in touch with a mate who was injured overseas. Tried for over a week to contact him with no luck. One day on Facebook, and I made contact. Good thing in that regard. The treatment of Miss Frances, Miss Shockey et al, are the downside of it.

As to Miss Francis, I personally don't think the photograph in question was tasteful and I wouldn't take a photo like that or post it anywhere. As has been said, she had to know what the result of posting a photo like that would be.

I find it interesting to look at the profiles of some of the worst "haters" on Facebook. Some of the more vile/concerning comments come from kids, late teen boys especially. (and that concerns me, these people are our future leaders and decision makers)

Hunters need to stick together. Without cohesion and a united front we are in the headwaters of that small waterway without means of propulsion. Every hunter is different, has different opinions, values and ethics. Just because someone does or doesn't wish to hunt something shouldn't be relevant - a hunter is a hunter, period. The way I choose to hunt and what I choose to hunt is my individual choice, it is different to the next person, different but not wrong or bad, just different. I would never criticise another hunter for the way they hunt or what they hunt as long as it is legal and ethical.

And lastly, if Mr Gervais was ever to call my daughter (or son or wife or niece or father or mother) what he called Miss Francis in one of his rantings, he better learn to duck, PDQ. Not acceptable in my mind, and a sad reflection of where society is headed. I doubt he would say it face to face, but hiding behind a keyboard, there are lots of people that say things they wouldn't say in a face to face conversation. I am no saint when it comes to cussing, but there is a time and place.

Hunting in Africa getting lots of press here lately. The CNN feature article for their homepage this morning is a follow-up to the Dallas Safari Club's auctioning off of the rhino tag in Namibia. Actually thought the piece was written from a "middle of the road" perspective, refreshing for a change. I didn't have the courage to scroll below and see the comments that I'm sure already have been posted to that one...same old story I'm sure though.

I guess my main question is whether she knew what the reaction to the photo would be like. Unfortunately photos are often taken in a specific context, and then disseminated with no context. I can see this either being her trying to show how large the animal is, or mocking the death of the animal. It's my hope that she wasn't being deliberately provocative, because then, mission accomplished?

I agree that the pic was pretty bad because of the pose with the animal. Posing with an animal from Africa is and should be acceptable for any media setting as long as you aren't acting the fool. As myself and others have stated hunting in Africa is necessary for the survival of the these big game species. The SCI and other world hunting organizations should do a better job educating the public regarding big game hunting in Africa. Hunters do need to be careful of the image we put out there. I am not saying we need to apologize for being hunters, we should be proud. Being proud and being an arrogant ass are two totally different things.

Rebecca Francis is no stranger to raising a stink by posting trophy photos that are perhaps a little provocative.

Yup, pretty much agree with that. I just don't get it and I don't get facebook. I would expect backlash if I took a photo like that and let everyone see it.

I'm going to guess that the photo may have been intended to give a perspective of how long the neck is on a giraffe. My understanding is that they are incredibly hard animals to kill due to the thickness of the skin (basically 3/4 of an inch thick). If she shot the giraffe with a bow, that is quite an accomplishment. Congratulations to RF on the fine animal.

Its simply a numbers game and the odds are staked against hunting. Millions of dollars a year are spent pushing agendas to ultimately end hunting. How much did you collect from your friends today to support it? To be a jackwagon because you shouldn't answer to anyone costs the support of hunting something. Guess someone else can make up for the damage huh.

Mike, I don't necessarily think the two are mutually exclusive. We should be proud of what we do but for hunting to continue like it is now, I believe that we do need acceptance from non (not anti) hunters.

Can't say I really saw much controversy or disrespect in the photo. Seems she is proud of the kill and wants to show how large the giraffe is. Personally, I find sitting on a whitetail a bit more "disrespectful".
