I’m having OMR put together a LA Tikka 243AI for me. They gave me the option of them renting a reamer or I could send them a specific one if I had a preference. They were not sure of the freebore on the one they would rent. Ultimately I need to know if there is a match style 243AI reamer with more freebore than a standard 243? Has anybody built a 243 AI and have a good reamer in mind? Looking to run 108/109 Eld’s and don’t want to rule out Dtac’s. I’m used to just sending a dummy round in, but that’s not something OMR does.

Any help is appreciated

Send dummy round or 2 to Dave Manson and they will make you one then you’ll have it to loan out to others. Haha.

If those are the two bullets you plan on shooting I would search around pretty hard for a longer freebore reamer or have them throat it longer if it’s an option. It might be kinda hard to find one unless you have one ground to your specs. I think most standard 243 “match” reamers only have a .055-.088 freebore so the COAL doesn’t get too long in a short action with the heavies but you wouldn’t have that problem.

Make sure your dies match the reamer too, in the past there was some discrepancy on 243 ai body dimensions. It might be cleared up now, it’s been a minute since I was deep diving into it. I would try to get reamer and die prints and make sure everything is GTG before chambering a barrel (or ordering dies)

To clarify are they worried their rental might have more freebore that you may want (can't add it back) or are they saying they won't throat something longer as a separate step to suit your dummy round if their reamer had less freebore that you wanted?

The former I understand, the latter I'd go find a new smith.

Yeah throating longer is just not an option they offer. They do amazing work and most any regular Smith is going to be a bunch more money, but really they specialize in SAAMI spec and anything outside of that it gets a little dicey. I guess I can always have my local Smith lengthen the free bore after the fact. Hadn’t really thought about that
