Q&A AB Raptor 8 eval

Thanks for the report, Formi. I really mean that.

Anyway, do you think L1 was higher than L2 and L3 due to first round pop? Or is it a limitation of the sample rate and rise time of the meter used? A 1.5 dB difference is actually really big in terms of pressure.

If it's a limitation of meter, have you considered a larger sample size?

Without getting into the semantics of whether it is an essential part of the Raptor system, I would love to see how the 8 w/ 3” reflex tests (and the 10 w/ 5” reflex).

But it’s sold as a reflex suppressor that “can” be used without it for guns that won’t fit reflex, or if someone wants a lighter hunting setup.

Why did you cut an OG and shoot it without the reflex?

The raptor needs the reflex to get maximal benefit. Call AB and they would tell you the same thing.
Yeah, the biggest reason to buy the AB8 is the OTB reflex. There's not a great reason otherwise.

First round pop. It happens about half the time that I’ve seen. The Scythe has it as well, the worst of the 6 initial ones metered IIRC.

As for sample- absolutely. If I/we were trying to say that is exactly what they are metering at, there would be a lot different. For this, it’s just showing whether the cans are in the range that they are stated to be by the manufacturer. Lots would be different, as it is, it’s just Ryan and I paying for all of this again, so 30+ shots with each isn’t realistic and without lab conditions as long as a can isn’t well outside of it’s known range, 3 shots with each combo should show a trend.

But with those reflexes, they’re kind of in a different category from about everything else in size, bulk and weight.
I think it would have been useful to just initially say you didn’t have a reflex to test. Because prior to that this statement is kinda odd and almost sounds cherry picking. The raptor 8 with 3” reflex is 1.3” longer than the OG, <2oz heavier. Lighter than the OGL. 1” longer than the LTI. Sure that is absolutely a consideration when picking a can (muzzle forward length in general with it and extra weight with the reflex) but if a reflex was on hand (it wasn’t you clarified) it would have been bizarre to overlook testing it.

Later you said folks don’t hunting the reflex. I hunted with mine on the last 2 years but didn’t have any full on backpack hunts trying to shave ounces. 4oz on a day hunt I didn’t care about. I have a second that I got this spring with the 5” reflex for shits and giggles, that one is mounted up without reflex for this season.

Long story short if ya had a reflex it would have been relevant considering the OG lineage is OTB.

Thanks for the data you have posted.
