I looked at a few different options and noticed that some filters will be damaged if stored below 32F, even if they are dry. Is this true of most filters? If yes am I stuck with using purification tablets or boiling?

Pretty sure this is the case with all filters - don't let them freeze with water in them or the filter needs to be replaced.

I'd use a Steripen.

+1 on the Steripen for freezing. Aron Snyder did some testing of various filters a while back he talked about on either the Gritty Bowman or Kifarucast podcast, can't remember which. The Steripen was what he uses after the test.

If going with the SteriPen, just make sure you filter the water for particulate matter first; a coffee filter or even a t-shirt can do that for you. The SteriPen only helps with biologic hazards, not chemicals or particulates.

The no filtering thing was what kept me from going to the SteriPEN for a years.

BUT, the "classic" version now comes with an awesome pre-filter that is sized to fit on a standard Nalgene (also sold separately). It works fantastically. I used it this past spring for bear in MT and after using about everything out there I think I've finally arrived at a purification system that I'm happy with.

Just an FYI with the steripens. Try to keep them warm if at all possible. They work great all day but when the temperature dips well below freezing at night they don’t like it and will throw an error light. Just keeping the pen in your pocket is enough to keep it warm.

when you submerge your entire bottle in bad water in order for the pre filter to work how do you sanitise the mouth of the bottle where your mouth contacts it ?

A cap cap by human gear is what I use. Take off the cap fill it up sterilize the water then throw the cap cap back on the bottle and drink from that. The contaminated water never touches what you drink from.
