Pump rifle

Folks,

Being initially from Maine the Remington pumps were pretty common there. My experience with them is that they are solid 1.5" guns or better. If you want a big hammer, find one 35 Whelen. The various professional gun sellers on the Internet should have some. Most common will be in 30-06 but that's not a problem.

I've hunted in a lot of places over the last 40 years. If I only had a 760 etc. in 30-06, I think I could be pretty happy hunting anything except DG.

Also, if you grew up shooting a pump shotgun you'll feel right at home with a 760.

I already got one. Very good condition 30-06 made between 1975-1978.. it came with a period correct steel weaver micro trac scope as well. I was getting ready to replace it but it just feels appropriate

I did replace the “see through” high mounts that appear to be the fad of the era and did infact purchase that exact mount and remount the weaver. I’m still considering selling it for a more modern one

We run either Leupold dovetail mounts or EGW rails on ours, several of the guys went to thumb hole stocks that have a longer LOP and needed the rail to get the scope back farther.

The EGW HD mount has been my go to lately. That way I know I can get some good rings on there and have flexibility with where the scope is. I am sure the older model 760 and 7600 without a monte carlo stock would cause issue similar to most lever rifles with a poor cheek weld, but the 7600 monte carlo stock makes that a nonissue.

Alright, so had some time for a quick range session and shot the first group in months out of my 7600 in 270. Given it’s the first group in forever, it’s looking promising to get to the magical 10-shot 1.5” group.

Below you will see we managed a 1.8” 9-shot group. More importantly, the central 7 shots were 1.32”. Will definitely do this again and hopefully do my part more effectively.

My only disclaimer is that next time I will remove my sling harness on the buttstock, as it made getting settled with my rear bag more difficult than in the past, which may have accounted for the vertical dispersion of the group

Ok @Macintosh, you’re up buddy

@Halligan that looks really good to me for one of these rifles. I know its not what you “wanted” but will be curious if you get better results at all consistently. I’d be extremely happy with that from mine, thats about like my 5-round groups.

I hope to get to the range this weekend, not certain, but I’ll post up a 10r group soon as Im able.

@Macintosh not disappointed whatsoever, more than acceptable for a gun than lives in the 0-300 yd realm. I’ve just shot tighter ones in the past and am aware of where I didn’t do my part. Excited to see what the next session yields

A lot of peoples lack of accuracy with their 760-7600 is because the barrel/receive fit is poor and they do not have their connecting rod properly torqued. Another is because of them leaving their sling on the (Free-floated) barrel. Check those two things and give the barrel a good scrubbing and they all shoot around 1" at 100 yards.

I always wondered is a guy could JB weld that barrel into the receiver to take that tiny bit of slop out of things but i was too chicken to try it.

Well, that and the accuracy is good enough for anything out to 300 yards as they are from the factory.

Haven't had a failure to fire out of any of my 3 Remington pumps in 36 yrs
As someone pointed out earlier,, I might be conflating my experiences with the 7400/740 version with the pump version. It was years ago using a family members' rifle but if that damned thing went BANG! 2 out of 3 times it was having a great day and if you decided to, eh, un-alive yourself with it then you had to budget several rounds as the only thing I've ever seen with less accuracy was a Taurus Judge 410/45 revolver.
Of course, it also had the near-mandatory "peek-a-boo, I-missed-you" rings on it too...
*Heavy sigh*

Do you own one? I would genuinely like to see a 1” 10-round group from one of these guns, even a customized one. I dont think it exists. If yours does this it’ll be the first I’ll have seen, and Ive seen a bunch. In that case I will happily eat my words.

Or are you referring to a 3-round group? Sure, even that would be good for one of these but thats a MUCH lower hurdle and not really what many of the folks here mean when they say its a “1moa gun”.

Consider this a challenge if you’re game. 😉
