Puffy-over or under shell?

I don't think any of my puffy's would be comfortable/fit over my shell. Really the only time I have my puffy under my shell is if I am sitting and glassing, if its windy or raining while hiking I will just have my shell on.

Also, my puffy's are not that durable, the risk of a rip is to high for me to have on exterior while hiking.

I'm always prepared to wear a shell over my puffy in the event I need the insulation and there is moisture or high winds, however, its a more common scenario that I'm wearing a shell, stop for whatever reason: to glass, to take a break, setup camp or whatever and I throw my puffy on over my shell because its quicker and easier.

Are y’all triple over sizing shells so that the don’t compress a puffy?
Depends on the jacket fit, if it is really tight through the shoulders I size up or look for a different shell. In all reality if the shell is to tight to fit a puffy under shell it is going to restrict my arm movement with or without the shell.

I have on puffy that I do wear for middle of winter but that has a water/wind proof exterior that is durable enought not to rip when I snag on a branch.

If your puffy is not wind proof, imo, you are loosing heat as the wind passes through puffy. You woudl be better off with a smaller puffy that fits under shell and allows no wind to take away the heat.

great thread. was contemplating this for a new shell the other day. doesn't the puffy need to go on the outside so it doesn't loose loft/its warm?

My “shell” is typically lightweight puffy with DWR coating. Unless it’s really raining or super windy I’ve not needed much more. Merino, thicker fleece or merino mid layer and then puffy is my layers most the time.

anyone wear a puffy over the kuiu axis jacket? figured that would be a good jacket to hike in then can throw my puffy on top when i sit down to glass.

A shell doesn't come out often on my hunts, rain or heavy enough wind to be affecting the puffy, thus it goes over. Hard to think of a use case where you'd have a shell under insulation.

Wouldn’t it block the wind just as well under the puffy?
It also blocks the wind from pushing your "trapped air" (ie the point of a puffy) out if used over top and the wind was an issue.

Yeah. But the puffy is meant to provide insulation in the form of trapped air.

In theory, putting it on over the windbreaker means the wind can move air through the puffy easier compared to under the windbreaker, reducing its insulative properties.

In reality, I do both ways. If it’s wet I’ll do shell over puffy.

If I’m just stopping for a short time I’ll do puffy on top.

Just depends on the situation

Do you even use a shell often unless its wet? I don't.

I used to do some alpine climbing BITD and the standard practice was you'd throw your puffy/insulation layer on over your shell once you got to the belay. This system would use your body heat to dry out your shell and additional layers while you were stationary. When it was time to climb again, you'd simply remove the insulation layer and get moving.
