use paypal “G&S”. Pay(you) the extra 3% so the seller gets their full selling price and you’ll get the paypal protection. (If the seller refuses, I would pass on it.)
Link a CC to paypal instead of bank acct.

Darkweb has plenty of lists people can buy that have accounts associated with your email address, and passwords your email address is associated with. Every time some org or website gets hacked, that's usually where it goes. Don't use the same password on multiple sites.

I just buy stuff retail and return it to big-brand-name if something is wrong. Also use CC to buy larger $ items since they have points and the protections allowed by CC.

Additionally, this OP said that the actual member (who was hacked) had published his phone number publicly on the forum.

It’s a terrible idea to be posting personal information like phone numbers, emails, addresses, etc. on a forum. Suddenly a hacker has something to link to the account and makes the job much easier.

For example, googling phone number can often reveal who a person is. Then you can find their email address. Then you can compare to info on dark web to find passwords associated with that email. Then you come back here and use those same passwords with the persons username. Voila.

The line gets fuzzy between Jimmy selling a scope he no longer wants and Johnny trying to make a decent profit off yard sale stuff he’s pawning.

Jimmy seems innocent enough but Johnny needs to be paying taxes on his profits like any other reputable business.

If it isnt worth it to seller it is twice as much not worth it to buyer. Buyer is the one who usually gets hosed.

The question is how much do you have to save to keep taking these uninsured risks?

Although I could see this having at least one drawback, is there a way to denote that a member has (or has not) set up 2 factor authentication? Having just typed that, I suppose that if a hacker gets into your account, he could then set up 2 factor authentication, which would then defeat the purpose.

For the record, I have 2 factor authentication turned on and my password is not duplicated anywhere and so complicated that I have no idea what it is.

Tweakers are pretty impressive. There are multiple dark web places to buy your personal information for 2-3 bucks. If Best Buy has a leak all of that information gets uploaded there. If you utilize the same username or password here then it’s fair play for scammers.

One of the better blogs by a former tweaked explaining all of it. Change passwords often and make them complex.

That’s how we lose our discounts.

And skimming for a % when you have to pay sales tax and shipping seems like a lot of time for little money. One lost product in shipping would entirely eliminate those margins.

I recommend linking all your payments through a nice CC company that goes after fraud like crazy! I usually use my Amex bc they are great about reimbursement if you don’t get the item as described or whatever. Obviously this is a little info too late but could help you in the future… gl man and hopefully you can get some money back through your bank!

We stopped pay pal years ago after our whole computer got hacked and they took over our PayPal account. PayPal was no help at all, we dropped them and haven’t looked back.

Honestly, I don't blame you, paypal has screwed me over a time or two so I try to avoid it at all costs.
