Proper amount of meat to give for help hauling?

I have had a couple young kids - mid tweinties - offer to help pack out an animal when (thinking positively) I get one this Saturday(still thinking positively). I tend to be over generous but I so loved my elk meat this past year that I find myself not wanting to part with any of it.

I am more than happy to share the meat. I just don't know what is expected or what is fair.

So lets say its a 1-2 mile pack out, no trails, over moderate country. What's the going rate for help?

Depends on how many trips and total time. They also offered so they may be more concerned about the experience and getting out there. If you asked them it would be a different story I think.
If I offered to help someone I would be happy with a few cuts. Give them something to take back to their families for a 2 or 3 meals. Maybe a roast each from the back leg and a quarter of a one backstrap each. I would be happy with 2 nice meals for helping pack if I wasn't killing myself to get it back. If it ends up being 6 miles over harsh terrain you might want to reconsider or else you may not have that help again.

If you approached them and asked for the help I would say give more and if it ends up being a whole day multiple packs that's a lot of work. If you need the help be willing to compensaye for it.

If they don’t have a ‘like license’ you can donate up 20lb of unprocessed game meat, anywhere.
More than 20lbs has to be at the recipient’s home.

I would say at minimum they should get a quarter to share, but a quarter a guy would be ideal. Offer it, they may just say no thanks happy to help. In my group, if we don't all tag out, but we all are involved in packing all the elk, we split it equally.

Yep, 1/4. Or I might wait till after processing and give them 1/3 of all the burger; and a combo of few roasts and choice cuts or summer sausage.

And all the free ice cold premium beer they can drink that day and a good ribeye steak cooked at camp after hoofing your kill out!!!
Assuming they are not driving that day.

1/4 each over 1-2 miles of easy terrain seems like a lot IMO, assuming you’re carrying out some of it too. Might as well just tell them “there’s 2 elk shoulders out there, go ahead and get them.”

Once you see how it goes, I’d offer them either a shoulder to split amongst themselves, or ask them if they’d prefer processed cuts and you’ll call them when it’s ready.

If it’s a long pack, rough terrain, and you’re not able to carry anything, I’d up it a bit.

I'd say of you plan on being more than just aquantances be generous. They very well may return the favor... me and by hunting buddy have an understanding that we just split whatever we harvest whether the other guy was involved or not. All started when he got a deer down and called me to help him butcher his own for the first time. I wasn't expecting much but she straight up split the deer with me. This led to me splitting my next deer with him. Both of us have young kids and can't make it out all of the time. But we help fill each other freezer when we are succesful

Thanks for the advice. All very helpful. Now I have a feel for folks expectations. Oh and I'll be carrying it out as well. Figure its two trips for me and one for the three of us.

By the time I've shot a bull, broken it down, and packed back to the truck/camp perhaps with a trophy on my shoulders........1/4 each is nothing in return for a little help. I could do it all myself, but help is always appreciated when packing meat.

we have always shared meat(hunting partners), the rule on the backstraps has been you have to come to the successful persons place to eat them.
I've never enlisted help from others...good luck

If I had to give a quarter of my elk away to each guy that helped me pack I would be doing it myself. My group share's meat but not a quarter, last fall I spent 2 days helping a guy butcher his elk and when he offered some meat all I asked for was 20 pounds of grinder meat to make some sausage. I know how precious game meat is and I don't want to take a bunch of meat off some guy that just needs a little help. Plus what goes around comes around with my hunting buddies and I know that eventually we all will be packing for each other at some point.

One trip should get it all out. At most one quarter for them to split amongst themselves, a few steaks and some burger wouldn't be bad offer either.

Assuming you know them locally I'd butcher it up and drop off an assortment of roast/ground/backstraps, if not to bad of a hike maybe 20-30ish processed each?


As for hunting partners, we split meat when hunting together straight up. If you want the other guy to stop his hunt and start hauling for you (or you're in a situation where you should only shoot one animal and you both have tags) that person needs to know it doesn't matter who pulls the trigger in regards to their freezer being full. I don't outright split meat from my solo hunts but when the dust settles at the end of the season if I had a good one and someone had a bad one I typically shuffle meat their way.

We do it all the time in our camp and i have never expected to get a ounce of meat. They know i will stop my hunt to help them if they kill and I know they would do the same in return. I am more than willing to share with them if they do not harvest anything but thats a different story.

We split half or a quarter. Anything under 2 miles I'm not calling anyone if I'm solo.
