Wondering what the law says pertaining to proof of sex on a Bull, that was hunted and taken in New Mexico, and has been skinned and quartered, then after hanging for two days taken to a processor in Colorado. NM does not require scrotum or penis attached to carcass, but in Colorado it is required. Is this only for the Elk that are hunted in Colorado?
Problem is, processors have all but evaporated in or near Chama where I hunt and stay so I have been bringing the Elk to Hometown Market in Antonito, Colorado. I have been leaving P.O.S. attached thus far, but wondering if I am flirting with disaster if I remove them when skinning?

I would assume you are covered if you have the NM tag and it is tagged 100% legal in NM, however I say better safe than sorry, call the CO game and fish to confirm. Personally I’d base it on the state I’m hunting in for the proof of sex, but you have to be careful cause transporting a full skull back to MN will get you in big trouble. I have personal experience where a cell phone picture with the tag on the animal at the kill site has prevented a ticket.

Proof of sex based on how the state you kill in is legal.

I hunt CO, sometimes have game processed in NM and live in KS, proof of sex from CO hunting area to NM processor is based on CO laws.

I got grief for a buck my son shot in Idaho that legally there did not require more than antlers when I took it to a Colorado processor. It will probably depend on the processor. I’d have the game regs for wherever you’re bringing your animal from handy.

When is Fish and Game gonna get with the times, declare all big game critters gender fluid and drop the antiquated " proof of sex" nonsense?.

In Oct 2018, I brought my Bull to Hometown Market in Antonito, and the first thing the man checking it in was looking for was proof of sex. It still had the penis attached, so he wrote that on the form, then cut it off and threw it in the dumpster. I am sure they are under close scrutiny by Game & Fish Dept to make sure all comply with the regs. Not sure what would have happened if I didn't have proof of sex attached.

There is a place called Carnivores in Chama, and i think there is another one a mile or two North on 84 outside of town but that could be the same one? I know that doesnt answer your question but if Antonito is out of your way then maybe check them out. I have never used any there I just see the signs when driving through so i know there is at least one or two processors around.

Thanks Nick. Carnivores is one I used two years ago. He is always booked up, and wants me to leave the meat for a week or two, then ship it to me. He does good work (Triny Vigil). A little pricey, and tries to get me to have everything vacuum packed (more $$$). If you bring him a quartered Elk, it costs about $500 BEFORE the overnight shipping. I always get my meat processed and frozen, then drive back to New Orleans with it in the truck.
The one South of Chama is Lobos Taxidermy/Meat Processors. Lance Leyba used to do a halfway decent job, (used him for about 15 years), then he started guiding hunters, and turned the meat processing over to some friends (I can't recommend them). They cut up the meat and ground the burger with chunks of gristle and tendons to the point you couldn't eat it. Quite a few "Mystery Cuts" too. Never went back.
I have never had a problem with Hometown Market in Antonito. The meat market processes everything professionally, and flash freezes it. $225 for processing an Elk is a really good deal. The father runs the one in Antonito, and his son runs the one in Pagosa Springs, Co.
I guess I will just leave the Evidence of Sex attached until I get it to Hometown Market.

The guide was really just giving them crap saying basically it would show they had sex with an animal.
Just a joke.
I can remove, sorry
