I have owned 2 pop-ups and have used them as a base camp. They are pretty darned good in that capacity. They tow exceptionally well and don't create blind spots. Gas mileage doesn't take a huge hit. Set-up is quick and easy. They can withstand quite a bit of wind. They are roomier on the inside than most A-Frames. When collapsed, the inside of the camper is great for gear storage, Heat and A/C actually works pretty well with them. In the southeast, there will always be condensation on the outside. That means folding them up wet when you get on the road in the morning. That necessitates opening them to dry them out before longer term storage. The pop-ups with storage on the front are particularly useful. It's great for storing chairs, grills, muddy boots and stuff.
You have to be careful when folding them down to make sure you haven't left anything out. If you have to pack them up in the rain, it's easy to get into too big of a hurry.
