I've owned a Platypus gravity filter (2L) for over a year now but hadn't had much more than a few chances to use it. This weekend it was having issues so I tried to back flush by pouring filtered water into the clean side which helped a bit. I then did the blow in the clean side test and found bubbles on the dirty side, so far no poopy messes, hopefully won't get sick.

My question is how fragile are the filters? Since they are $55 I'm wondering if I should change over to the Steripen? Its been over a year so I don't think REI will do anything for me here. I did keep the system in its bag in the outside pocket of the Kifaru Mountain Warrior so it could have banged into something. Thanks.

Not sure how fragile they are, but I believe you want to avoid letting them freeze. If the weather is going to get down to freezing, bring the filter portion inside the tent, sleeping bag, etc. I believe the filter has tubes that can break if frozen...

Can't speak to the Platypus gravity bags, but the Katadyn Base camps are excellent. I've used the 1OL extensively with all sorts of flowing waters either glacial or lower elevation with with high sediment and junky content. Never had an issue or been sick.

Thanks. It definitely didn't freeze but it must have gotten banged around somehow but there aren't any signs of damage.
