Even 9mm is surprisingly effective, if inferring from this small sample size. Carry bear spray, too. It’s not either-or. Bear spray is better for the species long-term because it teaches bears not to get near humans.

That said, I own a .40 S&W and want to get a 10mm as my woods sidearm.
People need to remember that it isn’t about killing the bear, we aren’t hunting it. its about living to fight another day. 9mm’s are effective because its easy to shoot and the bears now know you bite back. I remember when I first saw that thread several years ago, it surprised me how effective the 9mm is against bears.

25 years ago when I lived in AK, my choice was a Redhawk 5 1/2" 44 Magnum. Today it would be my Glock Model 40 10mm. I am so much better with it than I was with the revolver.
