Just picked this up from the smith. GEW98 1918 Mauser. Grew up around a gunsmith that loved building on mauser actions and always wanted one. Couldn’t be happier!

I just got done refinishing this old Husky 46 in 9.3x57. Shortened to 20" dangerous game style sights (shallow 'V' & a 3/32" white dot) removed & replaced the barrel band, replaced the factory M96 trigger with a Bold & switched out the original bolt shroud for an M98 style with a safety delete. That took a BUNCH of fitting work. Then I reblued the whole thing, stripped, sanded & re-oiled the stock. And made a leather sling.
I picked an upper-middle range load with 270gr Speers at right on 2000fps & adjusted the sights to match the load. It groups 2.5" at 100yds with a 6 o'clock hold & I'm very, very happy with it!
I did one for a buddy last year & fell in love with it, so i had to have one! I'll be taking it for it's inaugural hog safari next month.

My dad’s Interarms Mark X 30-06 from the 1970s with custom stock got range time last week. 1:10 twist and can group 178 grain ELD-X under 1” at 100 yards.

I have one in 7RM and it’s always amazed me how accurate it is for being a semi as well!

I'll share a couple with two images each: 1982 Rem 700 BDL in .243 Win, which will always be sentimental as my 15th birthday present from my parents. Still gets service time on antelope hunts.


And second set is a 1993 Browning A-Bolt Medallion in 7mm Rem Mag with a 26" barrel. I adore the high gloss walnut on this, but it has 'gained some character' from recent elk hunts.


My dilemma is whether I should I tarnish a classic by chopping the 7mm Rem Mag 26" barrel and getting it threaded for a suppressor that I intend to use for a soul-less stainless steel plastic stocked .270. I appreciated post #10 by HGL showing what one of these wood stocked beauties could look like with a modern twist, but that was a new build, not a modernized modification of a classic. First world problems. Really I'm seeking validation from online strangers for my choices.

Creating something new that is a mix of classic aesthetics and modern functionality is very different from soiling something that was born a classic.

No. No you shouldn’t.

It’s a beautiful rifle as is. Don’t draw a mustache on a Mona Lisa.

Also, with that long pencil barrel, you will very likely destroy the barrel harmonics with a suppressor. It won’t shoot the same after surgery, it’ll be worse.

Also also, there may not be enough barrel diameter to thread it to 5/16, so you’d need an adapter for your can just to get it to fit. Ugly on top of ugly.

Also also also, the 7 Rem Mag benefits from the extra barrel length and slow burning powders. You’ll be giving up velocity and really dirtying up the suppressor, and it won’t be a drastic improvement in recoil or report.

Don’t do it!!

Instead, buy a new rifle for your suppressor.
It’ll probably be less than the gunsmith work anyway, and you wont have to booger up the Medallion in the process.

Very valid points - I had been wondering about the extra powder building up into the suppressor if the barrel were to be shortened. You're also correct in that the sporter barrel is too thin to thread to 5/8 x 24 and thus would need an ugly shoulder/adapter install.

My suppressor will go on a 'tupperware-stocked' .270 savage lightweight hunter. There is little aesthetic value to that modern rifle, and I have no issue with adding a shoulder to its even thinner barrel.

I appreciate the classic wood stocked rifle enthusiast wisdom!
