As we all await the tag lottery results, I know many are planning OTC tag options. Again, like many, I am crunching unit numbers and accessing Google maps way too much. My google searches always zoom in on Colorado. We always read that Colorado is our "OTC go to" if we don't draw in another state. I have been successful there but wonder if I am "following the crowd".
My question is, what about the other states that random articles claim have left over tags? As I read it, Utah, Arizona, Wyoming, and Montana all have left over/general season tag options. These are states that do not get the DIY OTC attention that ID and CO do. Is this a case that public access or crowds become a problem in these areas? I am more familiar with Montana's tag system, but can anyone give insight on UT or WY tag options? Do these states have fine print restrictions that I am missing, or should I be weighing options outside of Colorado if I receive unsuccessful results again this year?

I believe Colorado gets the most attention, because we have the most elk, and lots of public land to hunt. If the other states are similar they should be a good bet for an OTC tag.

If you are talking elk, WY will not have any leftover general tags. There will be some leftover cow tags from the limited draw that can be bought as OTC. As well as a few bull tags left but they are generally units that are difficult to access, limited public land.

im assuming a rifle hunt? Bar is right ,here in CO we get the most attention for OTC,and yes you will be following the crowd on public land.BUT alot of elk are taken by alot of people every year. keep up what your doing, research ect. my favorite line from a fellow member 5milesback is "someones going to kill an elk, might as well be you".

I am referring to archery elk. I have done some reading of state laws and now understand other state options. I agree that CO is the best option. Just work alil harder and get luckier than the next guy. Thanks

Utah over the counter for archery elk is unlimited, just buy a tag pick a unit and hunt. You can hunt any bull units where you may shoot any bull, cow or calf. If you hunt a spike only unit you may shoot a spike, cow or calf. The only problem with utah is the dates of the hunt, this year the hunt ends on September 11th. The Bulls are just starting to rut a little when the hunt ends. Makes for some good wallow and water hole hunting though as warm as it usually is. Good luck to you!
