I went the opposite route on my .270
I put a Leupold when they had Redfield 2x7 on it. My old hunting grounds were some pretty heavy woods here in WV.

Another vote for an SHV 3-10 if you’re willing to go SFP. The SHV 4-14x50 F1 would be worth a look if you’d like to FFP. Just a little out of your price range new, but I’ve seen quite a few lightly used ones under $1k
