First test of the season next week with the rain we finally got last week a few ponds filled up. Got some down the shore and corner cutter blinds in tonight.

Haven’t updated in a while. Training for a VGP in September. I mailed her entry paperwork today.

Did Charli’s first blood track last week. All in all it was as non eventful as I would expect. Well done another one Friday morning.

Forest search is progressing nicely. Great range and persistence.

Blinds on land are good. We’ll transition to water this weekend as well.

Obedience is excellent. Charli spent a lot of hours at heel while I was bear hunting this spring. I’ve been putting her in a down stay about 20-30 yards in front of me and then throwing bumpers over her. I’ll then get Finn and run him past her on retrieves. We did 8 last night and she didn’t budge.

We trained independent forest search today. This is one of my favorite subjects to train. It makes such a dependable retriever. I scattered seven pieces of game across a pine thicket, approximately 150-200 yards wide and 75 yards deep. Repeat search commands until all game is delivered to hand.

Then a few blind retrieves. My pond has turned to a marsh. Easy blinds. 30 yards or so.

Lastly a blood track. I used about 8-10 ounces of blood over 350ish meters. I laid the track and then aged it one hour. Her second blood track. It was easy. She has a nice controlled pace and a good strong pull. I was able to work at the end of the lead almost the entire time.

Great morning of training.

Making some progress on the trained retrieve. Been going back and forth between paint rollers and this ankle weight that was left at a house we moved into as those two objects seem to be what require the most corrections.

I really got carried away building it. Started out of scrap wood in the shed and then I got fancy.

I like how you put space for the launchers under it. I just have storage on the ground of the one I built.

Like to say I planned that but I still had a couple of odd sized pieces of plywood when I was getting close to done that I wanted to get rid of. I did space the bottom shelf for dog food containers and launchers.

Are you following any specific system? I'm just starting out with my setter. First time trying it.

Great looking table!

Not really. I’ve read and listened to podcast about multiple ways of doing it. I’ve done a couple of my dogs before and one of them I wasn’t real happy with the results on. This time around I did purchase the Upland Institute to see if the videos helped me out. I’ve got some hard mouthing with this dog that I want to make sure I get worked out in the process so I booked a single session with a local trainer make sure I’m not missing anything in the hold-carry step.

This is a four day, every day stint of training. I had yesterday off as a holiday, so we did a two consecutive good forest work sessions.

Independent forest search. Four pieces of game in a thicket about 100 yards by 75 yards.

Same thing in this marsh.

Blood track. 8 oz over 400m today.

This bare spot was tough with the cross breeze.

The heavier vegetation is much easier for the dog.

The general obedience is coming along very nicely. Lots of down stays, work with my older dog, walking off and hiding, and shooting blanks.
