Off season for the dogs

How do you lay down the blood trail? You just walk along and drip it? I guess you don’t have to worry about the dog just tracking you?

I just use a water bottle and drip it. You can also use a ketchup bottle or something similar.

If you don’t wait very long, the dog will easily track you. Usually by two hours the scent has dissipated enough the dogs focus should be on the blood.

I’ll start stretching the time delay out now. 4-6 hours, working up to 24.

If you’re going to train a dog to do this, mark your tracks very well with flagging. Keep the dog on a fairly short lead, 8-10 feet so they can’t get too far off the blood. Only let them go forward when they are nose to the ground on the blood.

Yes, I have a tracking hound puppy (Bavarian Mountain Hound) coming next month. I’ve never trained a dog to do anything really useful like this. Any suggestions, tips, or tricks will be welcome.

Two of the deer I shot last year left no blood trail. I found one by tracking him myself in the wet leaves. He ran 400 meters with a muzzleloader sabot bullet in the top of his lungs before he tumbled. I never found the second one. I know I hit him, because I saw him go down, but he got right up and took off. I searched for hours that morning, hired a drone with a thermal scanner that afternoon, and then searched again on foot the next day, with no joy. So, I decided that I should get a good tracking dog. If I can train her up well enough, I might even look into helping other people track wounded deer.

major switch up this week for my pup. 2 a day retrieving focused sessions at a local field, 2 a day obstacle course sessions, 2 short swim sessions in the pool per day. lots of crate time. Need a big shift in his mind that fetch is more fun than being a nuisance with my kids.

Buzz is still learning to use his nose and build prey drive.

Chief is tired of me messing around and wants me to shoot the bird already.

I made a friend out at the retriever training grounds yesterday, and joined the local akc retriever club at their training day last Saturday. Finally getting some consistently good working attitude out of my pup. It's been tough to convince him to work when the kids and my wife give out treats and praise for everything.

Down to seven weeks until test day. It was a good weekend. We still have cleanup to do, but we are identifying the holes so we can focus on those.

Blood track on Friday. Overnight track, 500m. You can see where she found a more interesting scent. Prior to that she was rock solid and she was rock solid after I restarted her on the blood. This will be a priority over the next few weeks. I have a strategy in mind I’ll try out on Friday.

Did some water work yesterday and it was pretty flawless. Gunfire sensitivity test, blind across water and a duck search.

Did three drags this morning while it was cool. She works them faster than I’d like, but her retrieves are spotless.

I’m using oversized game for training. Normal sized for test day.

How does the Duck Search go in your testing and what’s your process for training it?
I am only familiar with NAVHDA and didn’t train it well with my first two dogs. I’m curious how the other testing systems do that part of the test and am usually interested in other people’s perspectives on training for it.

When we do a duck search, we pull the primary feathers from one wing of the bird. The bird is released so it crosses the water and goes out of sight into vegetation. The dog is sent and has up to 15 minutes to work. Depending on the test, the dog may be required to produce the duck in that time frame.

When I train for one, I simply set it up like the test. It’s pretty important you get the duck to cross the water so your dog gets used to crossing and not finding the duck on the near bank.

Have a shotgun with. I like for the dog to get a sight chase once, but that’s enough. Beyond that you can end up with to a dog that relies more on sight than scent.

Usually 2-4 ducks is plenty for a dog. You want them to experience the reward when they produce a duck from the cattails and then you shoot it for them.
