First muzzy tag this year, CVA NW legal using Pyrodex and musket caps based on advice from a friend. Rifle shoots great and have had zero issues so far. Been hearing negative comments on Pyrodex and not sure if it's junk or just a few dissatisfied users?

Also looking for recommendations on reliability? Heard of lots of ignition issues during good and bad weather but I'm brand new to all of this and have about 10 days to change my program if need be.

Any particular reason why? I'm brand new to all of this.
I have tried both and much prefer 777.

Pyrodex literally stinks worse. It is harder to clean than 777. 777 is supposed to be less corrosive, but I never let my rifle go long enough to really worry about that. But Pyrodex certainly seems more corrosive.

I find that 777 is a bit more powerful. I don't have to use quite as much to get the same results. I get better consistency in my groups. And the fouling seems to be less severe with 777. That really only matters on a range day.

In my traditional black powder rifles, particularly the antique ones, I have always used real black powder. It's more fun. I was gifted an inline last year and it does really well with 777. But hunting with that rifle feels like cheating when compared with a traditional muzzleloader.

Just look up Hodgons own data. Triple 7 produces much higher velocities. At the end of the day though, accuracy trumps all and with only 10 days left you're going to be hard pressed to get a new load dialed.

Pyrodex was the best bp sub we had 30 years ago but it really sucks compared to 777 (and Bh209). As stated, it’s less powerful, more corrosive, much smokier and it stinks. I’m not sure why anyone would still be using it….

But, you may just want to roll with it this season with only 10 days to develop a new load.
