NM landowner tags under fire

This about getting tags to hunt. Nothing else. Only way to get more tags to hunt is to take away UW tags and put them in the regular draw. Hell, I would even go along with having a separate draw (like wyoming special) for UW LO tags. At least it limits the cost to the same for everyone and opens opportunity.
most units that’s like 3 or < tags per season

so this isn’t about opening up land or leasing land, it’s that LO are getting paid market value from the public/one person so that all hunters can use their land. You basically want socialism type price fixing

Got it.

^^^ How to tell the world you're clueless about running a ranch or a business without directly saying it...

You do realize the current EPLUS program in place is a reward to LO's that provide meaningful benefit to elk right?

Has absolutely nothing to do with the LO running a profitable ranching business outside of selling tags.

Most ranches in NM's EPLUS program get ONE bull and/or ONE antlerless tag. A few large ranches get a few more. Clearly not enough to run the business, if it is a business at all.

But I digress. I'm missing the tone afterall...🙄

I'm pretty sure he misses all the points about how incentivizing landowners to protect game animals, improve their habitat, and increase the overall herd sizes and carrying capacity of the land for many, many miles around their property just by better managing their own holding...gets everyone more tags.

If a landowner owns thousands of acres where he is proving elk habitat for the majority of the year, then he should be incentivized to continue to keep that land in its current state. Favorable tax treatment and tags to hunt and kill animals that he provides habitat for, are a couple of ways.

You guys that don’t own shit and think you are entitled to go out and hunt on their property sound like communists. Go buy your own land, or play the draw game like everybody else.

Perfectly stated

They’re pure crap IMO. If a landowner sees no value in having wildlife on their property besides something to make money off of I will freely trade them my quarter acre city lot for their ranch. My lot doesn’t have any annoying wildlife to have to put up with. The tags should be put into the public draw and give people are fair chance at them

Nonsense

Just read the application rules for landowners to participate in the program and the scoring criteria to be approved and you realize these participants own high quality elk habitat that benefits hunters far from the ranch boundaries.

It’s a shame that residents can’t even draw a cow tag consistently every year.

It’s damned sure not because non-residents get them!!

NM has a good LO tag allocation system, but allocating 6% of total tags for NR draw is silly. Especially when they allocate 4 of the 6% to outfitters. That leaves 2% of total tags for non-resident diy hunters.

At 94% resident allocation, if a resident isn’t drawing a cow tag it’s because they’re only applying in the high demand units.

Ok, i see plenty of yall are in love with LO tags. NO matter what reasoning or non-reasoning is said about it. I do own land in NC and SC. I know what its like to be a landowner. But i dont use my land to make a living and MOST states do NOT have LO tags. They seem to be getting by just fine without them. But , its not like my opinion will ever make a difference on NM landowner tags. Its very clear the rich politician landowners will continue to control the wildlife tags in that state.

Listen, comrade - no, you don't get it. Not with this marxist jealousy acting like landowners are "rich politicians". That's some straight-up bizarro victim-mentality, villager envy right there, and it is unbecoming any American who values private property rights.

No, you don't get it - your "property" on the east coast is not even remotely the same existence as a hay farm or ranch in the West...when 3/4 of all the rain in the US falls east of the Mississippi. That's merely one starting point to show you how otherworldly it is out here. You aren't making a living with your land - you don't get it. Anyone who makes their primary living with a ranch out west is most definitely NOT getting rich. For every tech billionaire or Ted Turner trying to live his Yellowstone fantasy, there are hundreds of Hank the Ranchers who flat out worry about whether or not they'll even be able to pay for seed next year, or the fuel to plant and harvest it in a way where they don't lose money.

Why are you not accepting the truth that the more they do for those herds, the more tags become available for everyone in that zone, just by increasing the size of the herds visiting those properties?

Just finished listening to the most recent Hunt Quietly podcast episode. It covers the issues with tag allocation in New Mexico. I've always heard there's a lot of landowner tags but apparently around 40% of elk tags go to land owners. WAY more than any other state with similar programs. Obviously Matt has his agenda to push so I'm curious what general sentiment out there is on this topic.
I’m a NM resident. The landowner tags are complete B.S. it’s very hard to draw an elk tag anymore. Last tag I drew took 10 years. I usually put in for a good muzzloader hunt and all cow tags following. I still have never drawn a cow tag!!!! They are for NM residents only. I’m curious how many cow tags go to landowners. They charge extreme prices which is common folk cannot afford. Especially with the economy now. Not happy and I hope the powers that be make the right decision. Just my 2 cents

Almost all states have LO tags(Depredation tags) and special programs to incentivize landowners to A) provide better habitat and/or B) access or C) eliminate or deter wildlife problems.

In fact NC and SC both have a huge depredation programs.

The LO tags aren’t the problem, Your state tag limits are the problem. You should be trying to restrict technology more and increase tags numbers.

you are either a quality state or a opportunity state. NM is unlimited Private land deer tags, it’s an opportunity mule deer state and quality elk state.

Try again
Depredation tags are not even close to the same thing as a LO tag for ranch owners in the west. Next you will say the alotted doe tags for hunting clubs in SC are the same too. Try again.

They are the exact same thing. NM is just smarter in its use. Unit wide tags are a three prong program that affords tolerance while also working to improve habitat, and opening up access, at no financial expense to others.

The difference in NC is All residents are paying for those animals to be killed. With no access or habitat requirements.

You just refuse to see it because you don’t value deer the same as elk.
