I remember a time when Nikon was top of the line. I am looking for rifle scopes now and I see so many scopes from Nikon that look like they have all the great features that Leupold etc have and they are hundreds of dollars less..... I dont need a super fancy scope. I shoot a couple hundred yards...generally kill what i shoot at..generally fairly successfull. I totally get the "you get what you pay for" concept...to a point. anyway, big question.. Is Nikon still a top quality product....did something happen to knock them out of the upper tier of optics?

Nikon exited the Riflescope business in September of 2019. Their scopes are being closed out all over and Nikon will no longer be in the riflscope business.

If you want an excellent quality riflescope look at:

yah no way in hell am i paying that money...and i am certain i will never miss an animal because i didnt..

Since you original post references them being top tier but you bock at the high end glass price point, I would argue that Nikon isn't top tier. There are many other brands I would consider toward the top, Doug listed a few. In the Nikon price point they would be worth looking at.

Do you need 1k + scopes to kill animals? No. My first rifle was topped with $300 Burris and it killed quite a few animals.

Would I trust a $300 scope to dial consistently? No. That's why I saved up and on my next gun I bought something more expensive that I would trust to track so I can practice out at farther ranges than my previous hunting rifle. I'm still not using top tier glass but found the price point were I found the most benefit for my money.

Nikon has never made a top tier riflescope. I'd classify them a "decent" at best. I'd not even consider one now since, as Doug mentioned, they are out of the scope business. I bet they bail from the binocular market at some point too.

Nikon has made some of the best camera lenses forever....yeah they are a top company.

I'm a bino snob...and the Nikon EDG binos are the best I've seen.

I don't think they ever put their full effort into Rifle scopes...and Dougs right, they are pulling out of the market.

Hey Hunting,
The boy has a Nikon X-1000 and it's not bad for the money but I agree with Doug for about the same money you could have a better scope

When I turned 18 I bought the first edition Nikon prostaff to go on my first rifle I bought. I think it was $160 or so. At that time I thought was a good chunk of money for a scope. Beat the piss outta it and shot a bunch of critters and targets. Eventually mounted it on another rifle and sold the rig. 15 years later I’m pretty sure it’s still hunting.
Natchez has the monarchs still in stock with about $200 knocked off the price. I ordered one last month but they still haven’t even processed my order. Justin crossley did a review on here and gave it good marks.

I agree with you, the EDG is fantastic. Nikon discontinued the whole EDG line of binos too, and now the Monarch HG is the top shelf binocular for Nikon. It's excellent too, but not EDG excellent.

I have the 10x42 Nikon EDG binos, and they are superb. Everyone who has looked though mine are amazed. Too bad they did away with that line.

I am with you. I have several Nikon scopes most of my rifles have them. Buckmasters 2. Prostaff and tactical. Anyone who thinks you need to spend more $$ in order to kill deer at a few hundred yards I have piles of racks from deer that would disagree with you.

If you simply want And can afford a badass scope or for hunting much longer ranges I get it, power to ya.

Yah for the first 20 years of my hunting i shot a 250 savage with a 30 year old 4x tasco scope. I swear i never had to turn a dial on the thing. loved that gun for my california blacktail hunting, killed a couple mule deer with it too.

Thanks for all the replies. I think if it were not for the fact they are getting out of the scope business I will likely go with a well proven, Leupold. I wont be paying $1k for a scope but I know i will be getting quality glass with a great warranty. I am sure Nikon will still be able to service or warranty their scopes for awhile since the business is doing strong otherwise but i would rather by a scope from a company that I know is going to be around for awhile and will always honor their warranty.
