Newest Model Toyota Sequoia

Has anyone bought and put any miles on the newest version of the Toyota Sequoia? If so, any thoughts, positive or negative?

We’ve had some pretty bad luck with our GM vehicles and maintenance needs over the past few years. Looking into get out of our Yukon and get a different full-size SUV. Sequoia is on the top of our list.

Not a chance with eveything going on with the v35a in them. They ain’t included in the recall, 33k to replace the engine outta warranty when it eats a main bearing. Don’t walk from one, run!

I’m a Toyota fanboy and that all my family drives, so not just taking shit for no reason either.

Former GM refugee. I sold my last Yukon XL/Suburban last year just before the 6.2 recall. I looked at the newest Sequoia. I didn't like the hybrid engine and the third row took up a lot of useable space and couldn't remove it (check on that). I thought the previous version was better overall - better engine, more room. However, it came at the expense of a dated interior and electronics. I ended up with a 2020 Land Cruiser. Capable but less space which is ok since it's just me now.

My wife has a ‘24 with 30k miles. No issues, it’s a comfy ride, plenty of power, decent fuel economy. Like mentioned, the third row does take up a bit of space. We liked it better than anything else in this size class. YMMV.

When they started making Toyotas look like Chevys they also started making them with about the same quality as Chevy.
That, and Id not buy one made in the southern US. Wont buy another Honda made there either.
This from a guy with a driveway full of aging Toyota’s just waiting and hoping they turn things around, cause I don't know what else to buy.

It’s a shame the newer sequoias are not made like the first ones I have a first gen sequoia I use for adventures at 350k and have never let me down. My wife has a second gen one I wanna say like 2018 or so and she is at 130k her best friend sold her second gen to buy new one and it’s been in an out of dealer since she got it 2 years ago.

Toyota fans here too. My wife especially. She has had the new Grand highlander hybrid since it first came out- about 1 1/2 years. We have had a few hybrids for decades in both Toyota and Lexus and they were great- no problems. (My kids both have four or five yr old Rav4 hybrids and they have been excellent- 40 mpg)

I told her to order the V6, they talked her into the supercharged 4. She gets 34mpg in her around town nursing job- which is darn good for a vehicle that size and the way she drives it peddle to the metal. I could probably get 38mpg. She likes the GH and it has had zero problems so far.

That said, there is a lot of plastic on that motor and it sounds like its working hard just getting on the freeway. That can't be good for longevity.

Watch this before you buy anything from Toyota with that turbo V6. This engine had 39k and the mains failed, which is the primary issue. But even if they resolve that, look at the rod bearings, extremely worn for 39K. I have a 2nd gen Sequoia, 1st gen Tundra, and a Lexus, all with V8s and mileage from 160K to 250k. All run like new with only normal maintenance done over the years. I just don't see this motor coming anywhere close to that reliability.

Yeah, I was looking at all that stuff. Looks like they’ve redesigned the main bearings for these later models. I guess it’s still a risk but maybe less so now?

Yeah, that motor is definitely my main concern with buying a new one

That said, is there anything else out there more reliable? I don’t think I can bring myself going back to a GM vehicle. The maintenance cost beyond 50,000 miles is astronomical.

Everything on the Internet points to the Toyota Sequoia being the most reliable. Maybe it’s not very reliable, but just the most reliable out of a bunch of shitty options for full-size SUV.

Our 2018 Suburban transmission just crapped the bed with 110k. Had no idea it was a known issue and common failure.
Drove the new Sequoia, asked if they had aftermarket exhaust due to the sound. Sales guy said it came from the speakers......they have fake exhaust noises...it drove nice but that tells me they are focusing on the wrong things.

All Toyota family. Newest is a 24’ Rav 4 Hybrid. Holding my breath on that one, but the 40 mpg is nice. 20 Lexus RX 350 has been flawless.
Wife wants me to upgrade my 17’ Tundra, not happening with the history of the new generation of Tundra’s.
Sad to see the direction Toyota is going.

The recall applied to the latest model update 6.2 engines 2021-2024. Yours predates it. I never had problems but the engine was a ticking time bomb and many failed due to crankshaft failures.

Still have 2026’s eating them. Will see what they say in the press release this month, but they really messed up the v35a in the tundra and sequoias. The gx550 have some 2024 recalled engines, but not a single instance of a spun main, makes zero sense and people need some answers from Toyota on what exactly is going on with these engines!
