Newbie Question

I’m new to reloading on my own. I’ve sat with a buddy and loaded a few dozen rounds that were already prepped while he sat with me. I have trying to deprime some cases and having an issue. I raised the base to the full upstroke and tightened down the die when it touched bottom. The pin is protruding about 3/16” from the bottom of the die like I did before successfully while depriming some 7mm08 rounds with no issues. With this die (Hornady Custom Grade) the pin is getting stuck on the “removal” motion and pulling the pin all the way through the die. Basically getting stuck in the case. Inside and outside of the cases are gently lubed. I am able to remove it by gripping the top of the pin bolt with pliers while pulling the lever back up. Done this three times now. All once fired brass. What am I missing?

I had the same issue.. once you get your decapping pin sticking out 3/16”, you have to really tighten down the spindle lock to keep it from slipping. Put your backup wrench where the blue arrow is and then tighten down the circled green. Check out the video at about the 1:30 mark .

You also might check the diameter of your decapping pin - I don’t know if it’s even possible to force a large pin into a small flash hole, but stranger things have probably happened.

This is my least favorite part of Hornady dies. I’m pretty sure flames come out of my ears when it pulls through after doing 5 just fine.

Thanks gents. I had to take a time out from that die set and switched to another caliber to work on. I’ll check that video and give it a try. Thanks for the quick replies!

Just FYI, I have only had this issue with Hornady and Lee style dies. It makes me stray from both brands when getting a new die for a new caliber unless it’s one I’m just going to take the ball/stem out and use my mandrel on instead.
