Insurance decided to total my car after I hit a deer. It would be paid off in March. So now I'm in car buying mode. The old car was a 21 crv.

What are we thinking of the Chevy Colorado zr2? What about with a diesel? I wouldnt mind a truck with a decked system and a topper. Tacoma? Or Silverado? Explorer? What say everyone?

I've had good luck with my Ford Ranger.
That said, I am considering a Colorado / canyon for my next ride. Just something different.

You want full or mid-size truck?
Plan to use the bed. The decked eats up space.
Cap - look at the overland vehicle systems hard top. It is a "Smart cap" knock off with good you tube reviews and it's at least a thousand cheaper.

Hard cover - Diamond back is great. It's what I have on the ranger. On a smaller truck it is overkill and about renders the tiny bed useless to haul tall items.

Diesel, with today's turbo gas engines, unless you have the money to spend, or need that power. These gas turbo engines can do most anybody needs.

Back to mid-size trucks, most are rated at 7700 pounds towing. The ZR2 is a factory off road truck, going to be heavier, get worse milage and tow less. Same for the ranger raptor.

Everybody loves Toyota Tacoma's, and I considered another one. Playing around building a TRD off road model online. It cost more, towed less and the HP/torque was a little less.

had a canyon diesel. loved the engine. would not own it if it werent deleted though, too many emissions issues. also went through 3 torque converters, 2 transmissions, 2 rear ends, and a head gasket soo do with that what you will...

I went and looked at a ZR2 the other day and thought it was such a tiny backseat. And I need space to get the dog crate inside the backseat. I'll have to check that to see if it would work on any of them.

And at first I thought mid-sized would be the ticket. Now im wondering if it would need to be full sized. And would I really need the supped up offload package of a zr2. Or could just a regular colorado ne good enough. A trail boss is 7 grand cheaper.

Also, I have a bunch of frequent flyer miles so im thinking of it saves me enough money to make a couple hundred in gas worth flying across the country to drive something back, I might do that. For instance I see there's zr2's in SC for $7 grand less than one up here. Its at least a 2 day drive, but 7 grand is 7 grand. Though someone was telling me you have to be careful because some vehicles have been in floods....?

I could be wrong, but I thought they legally had to disclose if it were involved in a flood and it required a salvage title.
Double check me on that, but it think you should be able to get an honest answer on it at least.

The Ford Ranger has the roomiest back seat of the mid-sized truck options. You can option in the 2.7L eco boost V6 which has been in the F150 for a decade and it’s proven strong and reliable. GM and Toyotas I4’s are relatively new and untested.

If you’re interested in an off road package - Nissan just released a Roush Frontier..

Are you searching new or used? Used prices are still pretty high around me and new prices are starting to see some pretty significant rebates. When you compare used with higher loan rates to new with lower rates it almost makes it impossible to not buy new given the added warranties and such. Just something to consider anyway.

I've looked at Colorado ZR2 a few times now. It would be a fun truck in the woods but for me it's just too small all around. I feel like I'd be compromising too much on space, but that's an individual need and you might not feel the same. Same goes with any of the mid sized trucks I suppose. Good luck in your search!

My friend is making a fortune at his transmission shop on Chevy 1500 trucks, they have some known, flaw not sure if or when it was resolved?

2 friends had issues, one had his trans grenade completely the other dodged a bullet and had a neighbor repair it cheap before it went.

I really like the style of the Canyon at4 or the Colorado ZR2 but not sure about the quality? Plus the Canyon with the AEV package is over 70k, ouch!!!

Just bought the wife her second Chevy High Country 2500 crew Cab w the Durmax. Nice rig and a smooth ride. Just drove to Down to Ga and back to do some shark fishing. Adv mpg was 20.5 down and back. Truck is a 24, Nice upgrade from a 2016

I honestly wouldn't be looking at a mid-size unless you have a small parking area or only drive in the city. A full sized half ton is basically the same price and close to the same fuel mileage. Might as well get a truck you can put to work.

Probably new most likely. Because , yes, used is high value right now. I heard something around 5% right now for interest rate, which is insane considering I had .9 on my car.

I bought myself a new truck for my retirement gift a few months back. Never owned a truck nor a new car.

I have a 25 year old Chevy Tahoe with 275k in it so I had a bit of Chevy brand loyalty.

I was between the Tacoma, tundra, and ZR2. I felt the Tacoma felt cheap on the inside and was a bit underpowered. I liked the tundra but read bad things on the new engine and frankly it wouldn’t fit in my garage.

I ended up with a 2025 ZR2. For the price I could get it decked out for about what a middle trim Tacoma was.

I have nearly 5k on it now and it has performed better than I expected. I’ve had zero issues. It gets a steady 20mpg every tank worth a solid 400mile range.

The back seat was a concern, but with my 5/6 year old kids and a dog, it hasn’t been as big a deal as we thought.

Off roading it is a beast.

I’m on all the forums and folks rav about the last gen diesel’s. I wanted all the new tech though with the third gen and have no regrets.

I rented a 22’ 5k travel trailer for next weekend and am curious how it tows. It’s max capacity is 6k (for the ZR2).

Another consideration is some of the lower trims. Some folks mod them out and like them better than the ZR2. They start about 10k less so some wiggle there to buy suspension components.

Edit: saw your “new” post. These only come with the 310hp four turbo motor fwiw. It’s more powerful than it should be.

if you want to fly, there are a couple of dealers that are known for the lowest price in the nation and specialize in that type of thing. i think one is apple GMC or something like that. there's also a place in florida that only does off-lease vehicles.

2024 Colorados are 1.9 for 36
And 2025 1500s are 0 for 36,

I would definitely find a good finance offer from any of the top brands and go that route.

Currently have a z71 Colorado it’s great to drive around and commute in, haven’t had it off road or on a hunt yet.

They are definitely not a full size truck replacement and the back seat is tiny.

I personally wou;ln't touch any American-made vehicle with a 10-foot pole. Toyota or Nissan would be my suggestion. Frontiers are great trucks and you don't have to pay the Tacoma tax. If you want full size, then Tundra over everything. Buddy is a mechanic and he tells me all the time how American-made trucks are just plain unreliable currently.

First ever new vehicle in 2020. Had bad experience trying to get a Tacoma, so canceled the order and bought a Colorado ZR2. Just my wife and I and we love it! Put an ARE cap on it and it is what I live in while hunting (ext cab version, so full bed).

Yes, the back seat is small, but I found it forces me to be more purposeful in packing. Turned out to be a net positive.

I have yet to actually NEED the lockers, but love that they are available. It has been in some places, just haven’t needed anything other than air down and 4x. I think the darn thing would climb a tree!

It has made 5 trips to WY/CO from SC and hasn’t skipped a beat. Change the oil, rotate the tires, done.

It is not my daily driver and I only tow small utility trailers occasionally, so can’t speak to those use cases.

It does get 19-23 MPG (gas) on the road as long as I stay 75mph or under going west (into the wind). When I get the tailwind headed back east I can get the same mileage at +10mph.

My coworker bought a TRD Taco at the same time and he loves it too. He got the 4door long bed. After looking at it and taking a tape measure to it I’m glad I went with the ext cab. I’ve had to turn around in some tight spots where the extra length may have been a deal breaker.

FWIW, not a Toyota hater. Daily driver is an ‘05 Tundra TRD and it made my first two trips out west. I love it to death, but that Colorado is better in the woods and gets WAY better mileage. You don’t really think about that much until you take a 4500 mile road trip every year and start adding up receipts.

I recently bought a new 2025 ranger with the 2.7. It's been a phenomenal truck. Plenty of power to pull my UTV, back seat has sufficient room, and the 4wd has proven effective in navigating our back roads when necessary.

Buy another CRV. Those are fantastic vehicles.

It does not sound like you need all fanciness, expense, loss of reliability you'll get with the other vehicles + parts you listed.

Ranger Raptor towing is derated to 5500 lbs compared with the Ranger. 2.7 Ranger FX4 may replace my Bronco.
