New to reloading & bad time to start. Any ideas to find primers & a consistent source of powders? Have some primers. Been finding Vihtavuori n570, n160 & n140. Only found 1 lb of h1000. Was told vihtavuori was hard to get & may disappear again.

You can either check every local store, at least once a day, or hit all the online stores multiple times per day. You'll have to catch it quick before it sells out. The only other option is pay through the nose to the resellers.

I've found powder here and there at the big stores but I can't find primers except on Ebay and I'm not paying those prices.

The short answer is no. The longer answer is keep checking places and be ready. Don't second guess. Buy it. Or get on Gunbroker and pay crazy prices.

Good luck. My dad is an avid reloader, and he has good connections and even he can't get stuff like primers. He was told that they are all being sold to the ammunition manufacturers, so if you are able to find any in a store, jump on it. Just about most all of your components are difficult at best to find right now.

Same problem here. I'm new to it as well. Bad timing. Trying to get primers is almost impossible unless you pay well over reasonable prices.

Go to midway/natchez/powder valley, get on their email notification for when the items come in stock. Pounce fast. I can Make it a few more years before I get nervous, but I’ll be pouncing hard once we get back to regularly in stock components. You should too. I haven’t bought powder or primers in a couple years and I shoot a lot.

The market should let up some here soon. It's all overpriced right now, but some stuff might stay high for a while. Good advice re. powder valley's "hit list" and ask around locally- some guys will help you out if they don't have to pay Hasmat shipping for a lb. of powder and sleeve of primers to keep you going.

Check out your range clubs too- lots of cool old dudes who would help out a sincerely interested new reloader. You don't need a lot to get started... just get the basics and enjoy SLOW (cold barrel) shooting at the range. Make what you have last without killing too many targets- too fast ;) I have 7 rifles (I mostly hunt with) and I put about 20 rounds a year thought them (if that) 3-4 times a year at the farm.

I have an AR I shoot closer to 100 rounds a year through- when I'm taking people out shooting "cans". My pistols get 50-100 rounds a year through them too. But practicing with a (better) 22 is always satifying and CHEAP for plinking- don't need to unload 300 rounds of 223 every month (but if that's your 4th of July moment all the power to ya!).

Hang in there... prices should fall next year and THEN-- stock-up when they do!!!

I'm glad I just saw his post, I was about to start my own about the same. I've been worried that I waited too long to get into reloading, but with some of the hard to find, expensive calibers I have it's looking like now is as good a time as any. Have you tried locating 375 Weatherby ammo lately, or .500 Linebaugh.....Ugh.....

Save your money and be ready to buy when supply returns and prices drop.

The shelf life of reloading components, while not eternal, is certainly longer than yours. I'm currently loading primers bought during the Clinton administration.

Some of the best places are the little mom and pop stores. I recently found one that unfortunately is going out of business and got a couple of pounds of powder. No primers though. It's piece meal but effective. Sorry to see the small businesses going out. They can't get supplies to stay afloat. Sad.

Gunbroker.com, high prices plus shipping. Sometimes you got to do what you got to do. I hate it as much as the next guy. Zidaho is another option in my area.

I stocked up on a LOT of rimfire ammo from gunbroker.com over the last couple of months. I paid more than I wanted but at least I have enough to get through the rest of the next four years of "you know who". Sometimes you can email the place selling the item and get a break on shipping two or more items together.

Figure out what powders work best in the big boomers, and buy the 8 lb jugs.
A .375 has got to gobble up the powder.

To be clear…I’m not trying to be ‘the safety police’…

I recently added up all my powder abs found I was over the 20#? limit for home storage without a ‘magazine’.

So, I built 2 boxes to hold up to 50# total split between them…they are definitely not full…especially after the last year of shortages but at least now I can legally stock up if I find an 8# jug or 3.

Now primers? No idea where to get any or what the storage limits/guidelines are…looking into it but I doubt I’ll ever be close.

What is this 20# limit you speak of?

If you shoot a 6.8 SPC... BOTH Powder Valley and Midsouth has Accurate 2200 right now- Midsouth has quite a lot of Accurate actually- in many speeds (for $26.57 lb.) which is not bad right now!

Get on a notification list, buy in bulk when it comes. I will buy a pound if I'm experimenting with something new, otherwise it's 8lb at a time. Don't be scared to step outside the most popular stuff, as long as you're consistent in your loading and it does what you want.
