If you are considering fishing saltwater then distance does matter, learn how to double haul. You need to consider passing on the trout and chase musky on the fly.
I just started fly fishing this spring. I also bought a cabelas 5 wt rod with the whole set up. I have no reference but a couple buddy's hat fly fish a lot say it's a decent rod. I started practicing in the yard to but I can honestly say I Learned a lot more actually out on the trout stream. I lost a lot of fish, a few flys, and had several bad cast but I think the learning curve was a lot faster on the water. I am now going to get a few poppers and other types of flys for som pan fish fishing in farm ponds and stuff. I've heard that's a ton of fun.
