Haha. Non resident, never drawn. Im 6 years in and all red. Applied for a just mediocre unit this year in the guide draw, had pretty dang good odds, and still nothing, Just stats. I did draw out in Colorado last year, odds were predicted at 80% and I did draw, ended up turning the tag back because my father drew in New Mexico. When Colorado posted the full draw results deal, I looked and my actual odds were only 14% for my point level. So it can happen!

Mmm maybe if he likes you enough and the blind is big enough haha. But would be good to have a buddy walk you in after spotting a buck in the morning and watching him bed or if you’re sitting on a game trail and you expect a buck to walk your way

That's the only way to draw 16a. 1st time applicants get it, and they suck you in for life. It's a scam. and they float money for 2 months, collect all the interest. why, because you drew 16a once. So you're hooked.

I actually did draw 16A in 2015 on my first attempt.

I was ready for my annual dose of disappointment but when I checked I got drawn for one of the few nonresident bull tags for Valle Vidal. I had to keep checking over and over like it was a winning lottery ticket. It really comes at an interesting point in my life as I was diagnosed a few months ago with Stage IV renal cell cancer so this will be a very special hunt for me.

I would bet a nickel you are in your early to mid twenties. You feel like you have plenty of time. If not this year or next year it will happen eventually, no problem. So was I 19 years ago when I started applying out west and 17 years ago when I submitted my first NM application. No sweat. I subscribed to "HuntinFool" in 2007 and there mantra is/was "apply,apply,apply" reading all those stories of cool limited entry hunts was exciting! Good hunts in NM with 45-50% draw odds! Excellent hunts in CO with 4 or 5 points! You apply for moose and 15 or 20 years you will be going hunting!

Then point creep happened. Easy hunts to draw in NM became single digit draw odds. The math changed all across the west. A lot of good/great hunts are mathmatically unrealistic or in a lot of cases, impossible. Reality also set in. A lot happens in 17 years. Now I don't have all fall free like I did when I was fresh outta college. I realize now I have more time than money so I would rather pay three times as much on a NM premium tag and actually go than spend $150-200 for 40 years and never end up going. With what I believe to be a terrible way to allocate elk tags in NM I really don't like giving them $$$ that doesn't do anything for me.

You're not wrong. First time applying for NM I drew. Haven't drawn since.

Got the red/green combo - Christmas. But the green did include OIL Rhodes Canyon Oryx in September.

Drew 32 for Deer! Heck yeah, about time. As a non-resident all NM hunts are once in a lifetime, lol.
