Last year was my first year shooting a muzzleloader and I have to say thanks again to you guys for helping me on a steep learning curve. I really wanted to start with a Knight Ultra-light but lead times were extremely long and I ended up settling on a Mountaineer, which of course was a phenomenal shooter… but was definitely heavier than I wanted for a mountain rifle.
That mountaineer had a Bestill 2pc plug installed by the original owner, and shot bare primer with BH209 and Fury Universal 320gr extremely well. I admit I don’t know a lot about the red plastic jacket vs bare 209, so I ordered my UL with the bare again. That said, I’m not sure it’s built correctly, as my bolt looks completely different. Knight already shipped a bare 209 bolt my direction. That said, would you guys recommend the bare 209 or rpj for western states with BH209 use?
Coming from the Bestill plug, I didn’t do anything to go hunt and had no issues during the season either. What do I need to know with the bare 209 on this new rifle? I’ve heard a bit about head spacing but not sure what to be looking for on that. I’m hoping to have a good enough seal to not have to worry about water intrusion or blow back and have consistent BH209 firing.
