As a very soon to be new ID resident, it sucks for me personally but I’m not mad about it. This deal was too good and needed some more controls, positive move to protect Idaho and its residents.

I like the principal. Makes me wonder though... it would be pretty easy for states to communicate. What about an option of 5 years, or... say 1 year if you relinquish any and all currently held lifetime licenses?

Just how committed are you?

Were you planning on buying a lifetime right off the bat? I believe the residency requirements for instate are still the same.

I don’t have an issue with someone having a lifetime in another state. I bought both my kids one for Idaho when they were born and who knows where they will end up. I do have an issue with folks like the Elk Shape guy renting a place for six months here then bouncing back to Washington.

That's how it should be. The system has been abused for far too long. A lot of licenses should be revoked. If you move out of state, your lifetime license should be voided. That's should be in every state.

I’ve always wondered this about the lifetime license.

If you’ve got an Idaho lifetime license that you’re utilizing, isn’t that claiming residency for hunting? Any other state in which you reside, I would think you’re violating one or others residency requirements.

I’ve got a lifetime license in my home state, and it clearly says “resident lifetime license”. I full and well expect to relinquish that if I move out of the state.

For Idaho if Lifetime License non-resident you can still draw from the resident pool, but you pay non-resident tag fees.

It all depends on the state and how it’s worded in statute. It’s not always an issue and depends on what privileges come with it.

Part of the draw for me, prior to buying my MN lifetime license, was that it survived a move to a different state if I ever decided to leave. Mine is just fishing, trapping & small game. But I had been a Minnesota resident for a decade by that time and stayed another 12 years and counting. I just didn't want to pull the trigger on that investment only to have it be worthless if life took me in another direction.

I applaud Idaho for this move, you should not be able to game the system like that.

No, but due to the nature of my job I’ve moved somewhat frequently. If I stay 5 years (I don’t plan to move again, but you never know what life may bring) then it has no affect. However if I end up being there less I certainly would’ve bought one before departing.

People like I have been in recent times are exactly why they should have done exactly what they did.

Resident hunting licenses are so cheap here in Idaho the only reason to buy a lifetime license is if you were going to move away. What is the actual hunting license cost? $12/year or something like that, I save more than that by buying my sportsman’s package every year

This is great, and I like the way they set up the exceptions for minors as well.

The lifetime license may not be a money saver over buying a resident license each year, or resident license prices could skyrocket in the future. There's no way to tell, but if you have a lifetime license, there's nothing to worry about.

I'm just here to piss everyone off and let ya know I was born and partially raised in Idaho and take full advantage of my lifetime License.. best birthday present ever...

But I am glad they upped it from 6 months and would not be pissed if mine was revoked because I moved....

Wonder if they will wave the state income tax for 5 years if you aren’t a “resident”

I’d say enjoy it while it lasts. I’d imagine they’ll close that loophole at some point.
