I’m new here, I recently acquired a X bolt 300wm and need to select a scope. Use will be in western MT, I’m currently shooting 308 with 4-12 swaro hunting deer, elk, black bear. I’d like to learn to shoot longer range, what are y’all’s thoughts on a scope for these applications?

Leupold vx5 3x15 with firedot reticle is what i chose for my 300wm. 2 other good ones: vortex razor hd lht 4.5-22x for a lightweight option or Athlon Optics Ares ETR 4.5-30x56 Riflescope for a long range option.

Thank you for the suggestion, I was looking at the vortex. Why the leupold over the rest?

If i were to choose again i would go with the vortex for lightweight and the reticle is thinner. just didn't know about it when i bought the leupold. you can't go wrong with either though

Really depends on your budget. Everyone seems to be hot and heavy for the Maven 1.2 2.5-15 but they’re $1,200.

Swfa 3-15 would be another good option that is currently in stock and is a good bit cheaper. I have a couple 3-9’s and a 5-20 that I would definitely recommend; but they’re out of stock or discontinued.

If you like higher magnification scopes you could go with a bushnell lrhs2 4.5-18 from GA precision.

Any of the ones I mentioned have a good reputation for durability and tracking which is absolutely key for long range shooting.

I would personally stay away from leupold or vortex on a long range build.

Man, the hole just get deeper. The rifle was a gift so that opens the budget a little more. Thank you for the suggestions

Any specific reason to stay away from vortex/leupold? Just curious

I used a Vortex 6-24x50 for a few years on my 300WM. Then I got Nightforce for a different rifle...then I got a Nightforce NX8 2.5-20x50 for the WM.

The reason is many, myself included, have had repeated issues with those 2 brands, and many others for that matter. I'd recommend reading from here and draw your own conclusions. Zero retention should be the primary factor in scope selection.

That makes a lot more sense, coming from archery that’s what I like in my sight. Thank you this helps a lot

This has been answered on here and another 100 forums and a hundred times.

It depends on your use.

Turrets that track correctly and accurately are rare these days outside of top end Japanese and German/Austrian companies. Nightforce is the mostly 99.99 percent answer for the cheapest solution. Glass is at least as good as your Z3.

If just want to set up a rifle for MPBR maximum point blank range, generally under 300 yards. Then tracking doesn't matter.

If you are shooting a Christmas tree reticle, then racking doesn't matter.

I tried to train my 84 year old father to use a Christmas tree turret, it didn't work.

Depends on you level of Elmer Fudd.

I'm a Swarovski fanboy and each of my .300 Wms have worn Swaros. I'm still in that camp but I have gotten into several Mavens lately. Glass is not Swaro glass, but it does everything that a scope should do. I still use Swarovski binoculars for detail. I like the reticle in the Maven better than most of the other options as they get too busy for my eyes to focus quickly on. They dial and repeat very well.

Many of my clients (and I) have had issues with both Leupold and Vortex. Leupold warranty is sometimes great and other times hit or miss. Vortex has a great warranty, no matter how many times you use it.

The few Swarovski and Maven scopes/binos that had issues were dealt with very quickly and satisfactorily.
