It’s funny I went out to check out a spot for deer the other day, ended up finding another squirrel honey hole. 3 more for the pot. Squirrel hunting is pretty close to the most fun a guy can have with his pants on

I agree! Congrats on a great find and keep after them!

Very nice.
I've seen exactly ONE black fox squirrel in my life
and I was toting a .58 muzzleloader at the time.

Lot of great memories squirrel hunting with dad as a kid. My kids are almost old enough now and we shall soon hit it hard

Does anyone do anything cool with the tails? If I ever shot a black or a red squirrel I would definitely do something with them
I haven’t done anything with the tails specifically but I did home tan the hides from a couple fox squirrels and one giant western gray squirrel. They turned out pretty decent and are on a shelf in my office.

A few years ago I stumbled across a really cool article online about a biologist from Arizona (I think) that completed a tree squirrel slam. Has anybody else seen that article? It was really cool and very educational. I think it sounds like a fun goal. Has anybody on here ever considered it?

I’m a little surprised there isn’t more publicity for western gray squirrel hunting. I’ve not gone to the trouble of weighing either species but the western gray squirrels average larger, at least in stature , than the fox squirrels I’ve been around. They’re big and pretty critters. Definitely look a lot different than the eastern gray squirrels. And they’re certainly numerous around here. I need to make a point of spending more time hunting them.

Smacked up some cottontails with my T1x in the last week. Made them tonight into Hassenpfeffer from an old German cook book my uncle keeps- incredible.

@rharbaugh I just put in and paid for a Silencerco Sparrow. Can’t wait to use it on the little Tikka.
You'll love it that set up. My Tikka shoots the Norma TAC-22 subs really well. I'm not sure about everyone else's experience, but after ~10-15 shots my groups start to open a little bit. I assume this is from excessive powder build up in the barrel. I run a .17 poly bore brush and a dry patch down the barrel for a quick clean and things tighten right back up.

P.S. - The CCI Quiet-22 @ 710 fps are incredible through a suppressor.

I shoot CCI SV as practice ammo generally and SK Rifle Match for small game hunting. Both of them group extremely well out of my gun and are pretty readily accessible. I tried the CCI Subsonic HP’s because they’re 40gr and very similar velocity to the SV and I just didn’t like the accuracy I was seeing. My Hawke Vantage IR is set for subsonics at something like 1050 or 1070fps, with a 50yd zero it gives me MOA or better out to 200yds.

Was real happy about this one! 60yd shot while up on the slope of a draw, with those crappy Copper-22's that are 21gr and peter-out significantly at around 75-80yds.EyePoppinGoodTime.jpg
