New Durston X-Dome for Alaska hunts??

Bringing this back. Did you buy the tent and how did it do.

I need a 1 person tent and want somewhat bombproof free standing. Niak and the x dome 1+ solid with aluminum poles are what is on my list currently.
I did. I havnt used it yet, besides for setting it up briefly. Initial impressions are that it’s very well thought out and designed. The solid inner and aluminum poles are both exactly what I needed. It comes in about 1 lb less weight than the Niak. The Niak however is super easy to use and has more robust materials, so it’s a little less finicky to set up and use in terrain where you might otherwise be worried about damaging lighter materials.

I do think that the X-dome will fare better in the wind, especially lateral winds, as you can use your trekking poles as supports inside the the fly via the handle attachments at the top to secure the poles in place. I’m excited to try it out and get some nights in it.

Had an X-Dome 1+ Solid out this past season and am very impressed with it. Stood up to some wild alpine winds in Alberta with the trekking pole supports. It definitely performs better than I figured it would given its weight. Currently selling my X-Mid 2 Solid as a result.

Any snow?

Any snow?
Less than an inch on this particular trip. But these things seem to be incredibly strong in respect to top loading, so I’d have no reservations on snow loading especially with the trekking poles in.

Curious why push the limit for a few pounds.
I get it in most cases but if you’re worried about tent failure why not just go with a Niak,Unna or similar.
2lb difference for the red label tent.
Buy a new exo k4x and save the two lbs.

Are you guys using the standard length poles (as opposed to the shorts)? No problem fitting them in your pack?

I originally bought the x-dome 2p with the short carbon poles as I like the packability better. I am thinking about switching to the aluminum poles, but they are only available in "standard" length, and Dan says a short version is highly unlikely.

Also, as a side note, to the guys with the 1p tent that are wanting the aluminum version, I've seen Dan mention on few different places that the aluminum and carbon poles in the 1p tent are virtually the same strength. The 2p has beefier aluminum poles so he stays they are a little stronger than the carbon version. So take that for what its worth..

Standard length. I just stuff the tent down along the frame. No issues packing. Less connection points, less chance of failure.

Standard length and I put the poles in my size zip pouch on my Exo k4 3600. No problems at all. I get what he is saying about them being similar in strength but I can deal with a bent aluminum pole in the field but a cracked or broken carbon pole will be a bigger problem out there. I have not seen the aluminum yet but have a hard time imagining they wouldn’t provide at least a slim advantage in durability.
