I’m Hunting in urban area and 99.9 percent is whitetail with the bow. Now too many ranges to shoot in Washington DC area as well. I got tikka in 270. Planning to go out west and AK chasing caribou elk and moose, does it make sense to upgrade to a bigger caliber ? Get a better / more $$ rifle or just spend couple of grand on ammo and practice practice practice? I can kind of guess the answer, but do want a new gun lol.

Man I think the 270 is one of the most underrated calibers. It will do everything these new ones will do just as good!
If you wanted to get fancy you could always rebarrel and stock your tikka action! OMR are the tikka guys!

I don't know the legality in DC, but I'd buy a suppressor and call it good. Exactly the advise I gave my son. WE bought him a Tikka .270 Win for his 16th birthday with the thought that this will be the only rifle he will ever "need".

I’m in Virginia so I can get a suppressor no problem.

Keep the 270, upgrade glass if needed, go shoot and go on some hunts.

I agree with others about a “trainer” rifle though. Snag a Tikka in 223 and set it up like your 270. You’ll get a lot of quality practice.

I’d get a 243 to practice/plink with and keep the 270. The 243 works better than a smaller cartridge because it does have a little recoil pop to keep your brain used to recoil.

How about getting a Tikka in 223 and setting it up just like your 270? That would make “practice, practice, practice” more enjoyable.

This

I'm a little slow on the 223 trainer wagon. Finally got one and shot it today. It's basically an over sized 22lr (with the can) that I can shoot a long ways.
Planning on using it for big game too.

What magnification scope would you suggest ?

3 or 4 on the low end, 12 or 15ish on the high end.

Also, one of the great things about being on here, is the ability to absorb lifetimes of people's experience and knowledge. This entire section on rifle scope evaluations is gold. Bottom line on scopes is you want a usable reticle, reasonable glass, but above all for a hunting scope, it needs to be durable. Short version of what works in moderately to mid-priced scopes: Trijicon, SWFA, and Nightforce.

Your .270 will do everything you need.

Tikka in 270? My word, is there anything more vanilla?

I happen to like vanilla and own two Tikkas in 270 Win. I shoot both suppressed. I grew up in Alaska shooting caribou and moose with a 270. Bigger cartridge? Surely the plethora of content on here showing downed animals with 77 grain bullets makes that pretty laughable.

I declare the 270 as the Rokslide sweet spot. The .223/.243 guys can’t be too upset with you because suppressed recoil is not much of an issue. But the .30 cal guys can’t be too upset either because you’re not shooting a 223. Us 270 guys seem to skate past most of the ridicule, other than the admittedly weak-in-2025 BCs.

Thread yours, suppress it, top it with a 3-10 SHV and go forth, friend. Two photos attached for proof of concept if you need something beyond 100 years of just plain working.
