New 25 Creed vs 6 Creed

Where are folks getting numbers that equate the 6 Creedmoor with the 6.5 PRC?

My 6.5 PRC
COTS: 147 gr ELD-M (2910 fps), 1800 fps @ 975 yards (using box numbers)
Handload: 147 gr ELD-M (3050 fps), 1800 fps @ 1100 yards

6 Creedmoor
COTS: 108 gr ELD-M (2960 fps), 1800 fps @ 775 yards (using box numbers)
I said duplicative. Not equal. Virtually zero people should be shooting past 775 at game. Let's be honest here.

I have a 300 prc, and was thinking the 6cm would be my next build after a Rokslide special 223 Tikka that I have going right now. After seeing the 25, kinda piqued my curiosity about it... Nothing wrong with no kids and multiple rifles for sure!

My plan is similar. Tikkas in .22lr, .223, 6mm Creed, 6.5PRC, 300 win mag. Eventually I'll get them all configured the same way (c'mon, Rokstock Lite!)

My 20" 6CM shooting factory 108s starts at 2840fps and hits 1800fps at 825.

I see a lot of people getting around 2800fps from a 20" 6.5PRC with factory ELDMs.

At what elevation? I'm planning on 18" and I live (but don't necessarily always hunt) at sea level. My planning number was 2810 mv with factory 108s. I figure that gets me 1800fps out to 625 at sea level.

On your original post you could have specified duplicative to about X yards due to the overlap. But you didn't.

It's all good though. Thanks to you, I now know definitively that neither the 6 CM nor the 25 CM will able to completely replace my 6.5 PRC; my 6.5 CM may or may not be so lucky. Unsure if the cost of starting over is worth the reduced recoil versus threading and putting a can on my 6.5 CM. But there's always the potential for grandchildren so...

I currently have the 22, 6, and 25 creedmoors all in pretty similar weights and builds. On the second 25 creedmoor barrel and 3 or 4th 22 creedmoor. Had a 6.5 for a while but the 25 creedmoor was a significant performance improvement with a touch less felt recoil and 134eld handloads were almost 200 fps faster than 140eld handloads (after trying multiple powders in the 6.5 to squeeze a little more from it). So I no longer have the 6.5. Part of that issue could have been the factory tikka barrel was slow and not as heavy out front as my 25 barrel. But it was enough to sway me.

The recoil difference between exact same weight 25 and 6 creedmoor is pretty noticable for me. The 25 is right at the edge of easily spotting shots and some awkward shots in the field I can’t reliably spot. The 6 is a noticable step down in recoil. At 1000 yards I could not discern a difference in hit rate on steel between the 6 and 25 even though on paper the 25 creedmoor should be better.

If I could only have one it would probably be the 6cm, mostly because of the significantly less recoil without significantly different external ballistics.

What about 25 PRC? That's been getting my interest lately especially with the new 128 eldx

Not every cartridge decision has to be made on purely objective performance terms. There is so much overlap in cartridges already that the ballistic minutiae between them is pretty much meaningless in real world scenarios, save for very specific applications that only applies to a small minority of shooters. Thats with things being equal… add in variability in barrels/barrel length, loads, optics etc, then the on paper differences between cartridge A, B, and C can massaged one way or the other to favor whichever cartridge in real world scenarios.

In other words, I think: who cares, get what you want. Subjective reasoning for a cartridge is just as valid.

I’m excited for the 25CM being SAAMI approved for the following reasons, both subjective and objective:

1) I have a ton of 25 cal bullets in my handloading stash
2) I want to play with lightweight high(er) BC Hammers that require a fast twist
3) a SAAMI 25 requiring a fast twist will cause the market to advance 25 cal bullet development
5) Have wife and kids that shoot, so blasting my 25 cal bullet stash away will be fun
6) Even though I handload, I have less time to do it with kids, and my current 25’s are wildcats, so factory ammo will be nice
7) The most important… I LIKE 25 cals. Always have since I was a kid. Don’t know why, just do.

I think a 16ā€ lightweight suppressed 25CM would a sweet little rig with high versatility and high fun. I have an action waiting, just need LSWild to get a 16ā€ LW barrel in stock ;).

uh, my ballistic calculator says thats 1,725fps at 825.... Curious as to what you use. I use the Revic

My 6CM & 6.5PRC are almost identical

20ā€ 6CM 105 Berger @ 3060
22ā€ 6.5 PRC 140 Berger @ 2900.

Both get me to 850 at 2500’ and have almost identical wind at 10 mph.

I did the 25-6.5 prc as I had a magnum bolt faced action that needed a barrel. I went 22ā€ barrel and am just over 2800 at 55g. People say I can go up to 60g. Where the 128 eldx sounds good is my 25-35ai. A little lighter to compensate for the lower case capacity and it’s a sub 8 lb rifle.
