Need rifle advice.. Thinking about selling my .308

Eh..I'm going to keep the rifle. Its a good backup. I prefer my 30-06, but if anything happens, my 308 is zeroed at 250 yards and is ready to go. If I have a friend that wants to try hunting, I can lend it out. My 6 year old son is very interested in hunting, and will eventually go with me in a few years... I might just get the 308 barrel threaded so when hes ready, he can shoot it with a suppressor to make it comfortable for a youngster. I can change the length of pull too with the AccuStock. Its probably best to just hold on to it.

Right on. I’m going to work on getting really good at shooting my 30-06 out at further distances. My gun really likes terminal ascent ammo and the Remington premier long range. Furthest clear cut I’ve found in my back yard is 500 yards. Everything else is 100-300ish.

Opening day elk is tomorrow!

I would sell the 308 and get a better scope - you can check out the drop test results, but I would grab a trijicon credo/tenmile or Nightforce. The 30-06 will be more than enough gun(honestly overkill) with the right scope.

I agree with him. Sell the 308 and buy the absolute best scope you can afford. I have experience with both the Tenmile and the NX8. Having 1 bomb proof package that you are confident in is higher priority then setting up a second rifle.

The 308 is only 100 yards slower than an -06. Anything the 30-06 can do at 500 yards, the 308 can do at 400 with the same bullet.

I’ve always had one, and honestly it hasn’t seen much hunting use, but it’s a great loaner and ammo is pretty cheap.

Hey, let us know how you feel about that Maven scope once you’re done with your hunting season. Nothing wrong with keeping the 308. The biggest problem with the 308 is it’s not “cool” anymore. I tried selling one recently, and nobody would bite.

Rather than selling, I would keep the 308 in the gun safe in case ammo becomes scarce again.

Dont think we ever were told what this rifle is in question to sell? Does it shoot great or not. Regardless of caliber that would be a consideration more so than be a .308 or what not. I do prefer a .308 for river bottom/timber regardless. Hammers with 185’s almost no recoil is a bonus.

The Maven CRS.1 worked great! Glass quality was excellent at low light. No issues with lots of rain! I have my 30-06 zeroed at 250 yards, so if I were to take a 400 yard shot, the 5MOA hash mark sets me up perfectly. Eye relief is a little closer than my Crossfire 2, but I didn't feel like it was going to smack me in the face at all. Its a killer, simple light weight hunting scope. I'd buy another one. I also tried the CRS.2. I didn't like that scope as much. The eyepiece lens is smaller in size compared to the CRS.1. The CRS.2 would be a lot cooler if it either had an adjustable elevation turret, or more MOA hash marks on the retical. I think if you wanted a 15 power scope, save a few extra bucks and get the RS.1.

Its a Savage 110 Storm. I've decided to hold on to it for my son. He's going to start hunting sooner than later I'm going to get the barrel threaded so I can throw a silencer on it. The AccuStock will be nice because I can make it fit him better. The silencer will help mitigate the recoil and keep the noise down as hes learning to shoot.

Without a Chronograph it’s hard to know what the real differences are between a .308 and 06. I have killed a boatload of elk/other stuff with a .308 in 150-165s. An 06 can definitely shoot faster and does better with 180+ grains, but if you are shooting factory ammo you might be surprised at how similar the two are. The 06 comes with a bigger recoil/noise tax. I like my 06 (hell I like everything I have and load for), but I most often reach for my .308 for all general big game (Eastern WA and MT).

It is really tough to beat a .308 with a BDC or dial scope for any critter up to 450ish) yards.
