Tonight marks the first time that I am putting two whitetail backstrap portions in each vac seal bag, instead of one.

While one use to be enough for my wife and I, we now have three young kids that love to eat “meat candy” for dinner. It felt odd to be putting two portions in each bag now, makes me feel super blessed. Sad to think there will be a day when there will only be one portion going into each bag again, but I’m sure by then I’ll be ready for that chapter 😂

Hope everyone had a great season and freezers are full of many meals to share with family and friends!IMG_4599.jpeg

A good feeling to be sure! My son is only 9 months old but already loves his puréed elk meat.
Just moved my family to Mi from WA. Out there, we filled the freezers with bear meat. 2 OCT tags, long seasons, and lots of bears.

All three of my kids first meat was black bear, going to miss having it in the freezer! But can’t beat the mid west for filling freezers on deer meat that’s for sure! Congrats on becoming a father, he will be smashing his own steaks in no time!

I've raised 5 kids on deer and elk. I have 3 left in school....but don't think them adulting will change the consumption. Now the older ones go home with a grocery sack.
That’s cause they know their dad is a true killer! I hope when my kids eventually leave the house I’m able to provide them with the same luxury when they visit.

I’m a single guy so I portion my game for just me. I do portion things like stew meat in som larger portions as I use that at camp feeding more than myself and even if
I use it at home I wouldn't cook just one portion of stew.
Everything changes. I’m a older guy 63. Seems like Era’s come and go. I feel I am in the middle of a change right now with some if my hunting buds who are all older than me aging out.

I’ve got 3 boys in the house 15, 13, and 11 and they can eat! As they grew I would make the portion size accordingly. As of the last 2 years we keep the sizes the same but pull out 2 packages. I used to have leftovers but not no moe.

I have two sons (4&2) and a daughter (1). I put 5 whitetails in the freezer this year and already am thinking about how I’ll likely have to go to Wisconsin for a September archery hunt to restock as soon as possible.

I can’t imagine the amount of food you guys go through! I’ll need a third freezer come that time it sounds like!

Funny how life’s seasons change, no doubt!

Love the topic.

I bet you'll find those bags are light midway thru the year. My boys are about to turn 5 and 3 and I ran into that this year. Particularly with backstrap and inners. They eat easily 1.5x backstrap vs top round or other steak cuts. I packed mine 1.5 of yours this year and won't be surprised if they end up light.

Wouldn’t surprise me one bit! Funny how it’s the little things that hit deep in fatherhood, that we would never expect. Changes fast!

How’s the 5 year old with helping processing meat? My oldest just turned 4. Kid loves to hunt, has been with me for a few deer now. Holds a leg, the whole 9. But when it comes to cutting meat, he doesn’t care as much. Butchering critters are some of the fondest memories I have with my dad, and excited to be able to do that with my kids. Not wishing these days away, but excited for the help and memories made! 😂😂

Pretty similar, 1 girl 17, 2 boys 12,15, and she'll out eat the boys when it comes time for steak!

You'll definitely be pulling two of those bags out in a few more years!

He’s fully brainwashed at this point. I’ll help the older one with a real knife or turn both loose with butter knives. Gonna be a game changer when they can help with burger trimming.

I'm not much ahead of you in this parenting thing, but my strategy has been to try and make everything as fun and comfortable as possible. I like to point out where our dinner comes from and am genuinely excited about it. From deer to fish he knows where our food comes from. As into it as you seem to be I'm sure he will be as well.

My biggest struggle so far has been explaining why we can't eat every 4" bluegill we catch. I'll admit I've cleaned more than a few small ones just to keep the "magic" for him. That and season end dates.

With my son off to college we are going from 3 to 2 portions. Sad to think next time we make burgers it will only be 2.

That’s awesome for sure!!! I’ll have to try the butter knife thing, great tip!

My oldest very much understands where the food comes from thing, we always make a big deal of “this dinner is from your doe buddy! Thanks for helping get us dinner!”. Dude loves it. But quickly bored once I bring a quarter out on the table and start breaking it down 😂
