So, this year on second week of muzzleloader we shot 4 bucks on our farm. One is at the taxidermist as he measured 22-23” wide. Not impressive on points but unique and wide for sure. Illl drop that pic in here as well.

The other three bucks were decent. My bro in laws first deer and the other two mine. I skinned em out and trimmed fat , muscle and tendons the best I could, then, I did like most everyone else and like I traditionally, crab pot with few squeezes of dawn, a packet or two of clothing wash and a couple pours of purple power. Too much? Maybe. Dunno.

I bring em to a boil for a bit and then let em simmer. After they cool down and reach air temp I hit em with the pressure washer and clean it all out. Typical procedure for me.

So once they are clean I hit em with a propane hand torch real quickly and lightly just to do a little drying. No flame, just heat.

Then I have a homemade low temp heater and leave em for 24 hours, this is where I will usually do the peroxide deal, white the skull and then use a satin clear. This time I tried the route of dark grey primer and was tempted to leave them.

Golden max flex grey primer and then I used their wayward white in satin. I think it came out damn good, doesn’t look commercially painted by any means.

We’ll see durability.

Pics are the 2 euro mounts, one still drying and the big guy that’s at the taxidermist.

You wasted your time with the grey primer. What made you want to use grey primer ? To each his own whatever you like
When you use peroxide you need the whitener with it. Plain peroxide works but if you really want it nice you need to add the the lightener they also sell.
Your missing your nasal bones. Glue them back in ,it looks sloppy without them .
You don't need to boil them, you'll be fine with a slow simmer
Boiling is like a kid playing with matches or a fire. You might not get burned right away but eventually you will . It doesn't take long for it to mess up.
You should never use satin on skulls or gloss. Only ever flat matte sealer. Bone is naturally flat .

Thanks mom, I’ll go to my room now haha.

Did I waste my time? Probably not. Didn’t have much going on that day anyways so.

I went the primer route bc I had it and would rather a uniform color as a finish. Would the white have finished off uniform, probably. With as many coats.

The sloppy look is how it’s gonna be. Don’t have the nasal bones anymore. Sorry it doesn’t meet your satisfaction.

Peroxide and whitener would have been awesome. I don’t live w my gf , who wouldn’t have those hair products anyhow. And tbh vulnerably honest my bank acct is not fancying any expenditures not required at the moment. I used what I had on hand.

I do appreciate the tip on boiling vs simmering. I’ll def try a simmer only next time. Common sense says slow cookers pull meat off bones anyhow. Thanks for the advice

Oh, I like the satin look. Not glossy, not flat. Works for me. I’m not a business over here

You can't ask for advice or opinions, and then act like a queen when you get some; When someone tells you real professional advice for free that people pay hundreds of dollars to learn. I was just at Sally's beauty supply and Walmart today. And looked at the small sizes of products. You could do a single skull for less than 15 dollars with the right supplies.
This is to be helpful. The primer wouldn't make any difference at all with uniformity. If your having problems with a solid color through out it sounds like you didn't degrease it properly as to why you painted over it. Which comes with boiling .

Def not a queen here , I was laughing while reading the response.

I did not have an issue with a uniform finish. I didn’t paint it to cover grease/oil stains. I did it bc I had an idea, wanted to try it, and I like the results. That is all.

15 dollars times 3 skulls would have been more than I comfortably felt spending, especially with a pile of nieces and nephews and Christmas around the corner.

Again, I appreciate your assistance, blunts never been my issue.
