Very nice setup! I have a 284 win gap mcgowen barrel screwed onto a Ruger American that shoots really well. Have you ran into any issues with the chamber neck being too tight for non turned brass? My rifle shoots fine and chambers round fine but definitely a snug fit for Peterson and Lapua brass.
Definitely has a tight neck. I ended up turning my necks for the first 100 pieces of brass. Before I get into the next 100 pieces I will have it opened up a few thou.

Great thread. I'm gonna pick up another barrrel and get it chambered in .284. I already have a .25-284, so sharing brass for 2 rifles would be sweet. If I like the .284, I may sell the 7-08 barrel. Sounds like a good winter project.

EDIT: I ran the 180 at 2700 MV through Berger's twist rate calculator with 9 twist, and it was stable at 1600', and better as expected at 5000'+. Are you guys running 1:9 for the heavies or faster?

When I ordered mine I went with 1:8 to have more stability/options with longer bullets later and with a shorter barrel I don't expect to overspin anything.

Is there any more "modern" reloading data available for the .284? Hodgdon and Hornady are both quite watered down compared to the numbers ya'll have been posting. Virtually the same as the 7-08 even though it has significantly more case capacity.

The hodgdon load data sorta depends on the bullet, some are short/tame but some bullets they have data at longer COAL values. For instance they list the 162gr btsp at 2.97 coal with 43.5gr H4350 and 2847fps from a 24" barrel and listed at ~62-63ksi (once you convert from CUP), that one doesn't seem watered down. Anyone pushing it harder is just running over pressure, which plenty do all the time but the manufacturers aren't going to put out "hot" data.

Roger that man and thank you. Hodgdon has the 7-08 with 162s at 2821 with 47.8gr of SB 6.5. I ran into pressure at 47.2 in my 7-08 at 2720 MV in an 18" barrel. I guess my point is, if the .284 is only going to gain 100-150 fps with the same bullet weights, I'll just stick with my 7-08 even though it would be nice to share brass.

Well you kinda cherry picked a 7-08 load, SB 6.5 is much faster than other powders (according to hodgdon data) and they don't have SB 6.5 data for 284win to compare it to. H4350 in 7-08 for that is 2622fps, so the 284win in that situation is 200+ fps faster. If you work up a load with SB 6.5 in a 284win you may very well see faster speeds, dunno.

I ran into the same issue with my 25-284 load data, and fortunately some guys on here had experimented and done the heavy lifting already.

I was just hoping that guys had observed that the SB 6.5 advantage over H4350 for the 7-08 was consistent with the .284. At this point, I don't have enough information to to justify a new .284 build vs. my 7-08 (although it would be fun if I had unlimited resources!)

I ran Stabil 6.5 in one 284. A different rifle than the one I started this thread about. So small sample size, but I did not get better speed than with h4350. This was with 180 ELDMs.
