For both my 284Win I actually shoot the 162’s and 180’s in a standard short action with AIC mags, COAL of 2.950”. Plenty of case capacity left

I built a 284 as an ultralight last year. Defiance XM Anti with a 22” Lilja barrel and Manners UL stock. Came out slightly over 5lbs. So far I’ve only done load work with the 168 Berger. RL17 had great velocity but I couldn’t get the accuracy I was after and ended up with H4350. I’m going to start with the 162 ELDX over the next few weeks. Below are my loads with H4350 and RL17.

52.8 gr H4350 at 2805 fps. 0.6 MOA
53.3 gr RL17 at 2915 fps. 1.3 MOA

Both loads were 0.020 off the lands.

Loved this rifle last fall and excited for this fall. A joy to pack and easy to shoot. Took a 170” mule buck at 612 yards and a 6 pt bull at 315 yards.

I’m not sure if you played around with 180s at all but I’ve tested a few in one of my rifles and was pretty easy to hit 2800fps. With getting 180’s at 2800fps and 162’s at 3000fps I don’t see the point of a 7mm rem mag either. I love the 284Win.
What length barrels are you running for those velocities?

I think the H4350 burn rate is perfect. Also had great luck with 6.5 Staball and I know others are using RL17 with great success
Do you have any load info for 180s with the 6.5 staball? I have a pound I want to try. What charge did you start with? Where did you hit pressure?

Man this is interesting, and kind of irritating lol. I went with SAAMI 280ai on a Tikka action and I'm burning 58.4gr H4831 and only getting 2820 avg velocity, and that's 2gr over book max. But I'm jumping a country mile so that probably explains some of it. I've got a batch of Peterson brass on the way to retune everything so maybe that will do me some justice.

I shot a ladder tonight with H4350 and 180 ELDMs. I loaded 5 shots, starting at 50 and went to 52 in .5 grain increments. This barrel has really impressed me up to this point. I hit pressure at 52 grains with a speed of 2802 fps. 51.5 grains was 2772 fps and no pressure signs. The 180 boattail junction is seated about .16" past the neck shoulder junction of the brass. If the barrel was properly throated for the 180s I think 2800 would be in reach. The other geoups with pen markings are from a different rifle. I have 24 shots down the barrel now.
That's insane. I just started testing Ramshot LRT and 180 VLD in 28 Nosler with a 26" Proof and 87gr only yielded 2992 fps.. I haven't tested the ELD yet but that's just blowing my mind.

Since starting this thread we put a 284 together for my my dad. It is specifically throated for the 180 eldm by Preferred barrels in one of their prefits. We are getting 2815ish out of his 25" barrel with 57.2 grains of H4831SC. 58 grains showed pressure and was about 2860 if I remember correctly. We do need to shoot this load on a hot summer day though to see if things are still okay pressure wise. Keep in mind this bullet is WAY outside the case and powder capacity is optimized.

That's awesome. I'm waiting for a call back from Kampfeld to see if there's enough meat left on the tenon and if he feels comfortable punching mine out to a 284 Win, dimensions look like it's possible so I might be converting soon lol.

Talked to Kampfeld and we left plenty of shank on the tube so it's a no problem deal, sending it back to be set back and punched out to straight 284 Win. How did you determine throat dimension in that one? I think I'm going to throat mine for 162 ELD/168 VLD and go bottom edge of bearing surface seated close to neck/shoulder junction, + .050" to the lands so there's a little wiggle room.

We sent in a dummy round and they cut the throat to fit. I have no idea what the free bore is on the rifle other than it is pretty long!

Curious what your CBTO is? My barrel is showing a CBTO of 2.400“ that is 20 back from jam. The OAL with a 162gr. ELD Is 3.07”.

The neck is rather short, so definitely want to catch the entire bearing surface.

That is very similar to what my rifle is. My dad's rifle, that we had throated for the 180 eldm is longer. I'll have to check my notes though.

I'll start off with why I went with the 284. Last year I put together a 7 SAUM with a tikka prefit for my brother in-law. It is a carbon six barrel and it has been very accurate from the beginning. The problem is that SAUM brass is hard to get unless you are willing to pay the price gougers. I am not!

I went looking for different options that work well with a tikkas COAL restrictions. The 284 caught my attention. I knew it would not have the speed of the SAUM but I could get Laupa brass anytime I wanted and one of the top powders is H4350 which I have a lot off. I decided to give it a try. Worst case I am out $450 for the barrel. Every thing showed up this week and I put it together Thursday night.

Specs:

-24" McGowen barrel, #5 Douglas contour. For those wondering this barrel weighted 3 pounds 5 oz. I used their 284 Gap Reamer.
-Ross 4 port break
-Leupold backcountry rings
-Trijicon Credo 4-16x50
-Mtn tactical trigger spring
-Tikka vertical grip
-Total weight is 9 lbs 5 oz

Everything else is stock besides the kydex cheek piece I made myself.

I started by loading 4, 162 ELDMs. I began at 52 grains and ended at 53.5 grains. I shot them over the chronograph and was plesently suprised! 53.5 grains showed no pressure and was 2909 fps! I was hoping for 2850. I went home cleaned the barrel and loaded 5 more at 53.5 grains. This resulted in an average speed of 2911 with an ES of 15 and an SD of 6. Things were looking good! I cleaned the barrel again. Loaded 5 more and shot the next 2 over the chronograph again. Both were 2906.

At that point I took off the magnetospeed and really focused on shooting a 3 shot group. The 7 shot group with the magnetospeed was probably less than 1" but not by much. Maybe 7/8"ish. I CAN NOT normally shoot a group like this and it is not likely I'll shoot one like this again. This could be a fluke but things are looking good so far.

I will keep this thread updated if people are interested. There is a lot of info out there for the 284 but 95% is focused on f-class shooters. Hopefully this can help people out a little and provide some info I was looking for when wanting to build this hunting rifle.
Very well done!

Right on, I'll be sending a dummy in too. I'm copying you almost to a T, my Trijicon Credo just showed up today.

Unfortunately there isn't any Lapua or Peterson 284 Win brass available right now, so if anyone has a new box of 100 they wouldn't mind selling me in a pinch I'd really appreciate it, and prefer to do that as opposed to necking up 6.5x284.

The load we are shooting in my dad's rifle has a COAL of 3.265" with a 180 eldm. It is about .020 from the lands.

Am I the only one without a gun who’s picked up .284 brass after reading this!? 🙂 Great combination and it’s a good shooter!

Was brass recently available? I bought 100pcs of Lapua a while ago and have a PBB tikka prefit but haven't put it together yet.
