I don't know the guy and am not making excuses for him. But, I will say that for all you guys using On X, Gaia, tax book records, USFS maps etc... as the gospel for property lines, you could find yourself in a very hairy predicament one day. All have their errors. Since On X Gaia, etc... are using tax record maps as their source of landowner lines, there is no way it can be right all the time. You'd really be surprised how often they aren't.

As far as his shooting ability, the guy finished off a wounded deer. And was shooting long ranges.

Seems to be a lot of guys that have better info then the average Joe to be bashing him like this

Update from Hilleberg. MuleyFreak isn’t one of their sponsored athletes but was getting a special guide price on the tents he was buying. They will no longer be giving him those prices.

Small sidebar with the above info... I've never understood why people say they have a sponsor when in reality they only have an industry, guiding/outfitting or even an emergency responders discount. I knew a guy once that told everyone he was a Sitka ambassador, when in reality he has a guides discount for their website that every guide and their mother has. Just a title I suppose, but good Lord.

Sad how some have to make themselves feel “cool”.

Update from Rhino Metals Inc.

I'm going to summarize the email in my own words and not direct post the email here.
We dont care, sounds like the courts took care of it and he was punished.

I'm going to pass on doing any future business with Rhino myself due to this response.

Sounds like their marketing Dept doesn't know how to at least be diplomatic, even if they aren't doing much about it.

From a 10,000ft view. I live and work in the middle of the largest pile of garbage personalities in the country - smack dab in the middle of Los Angeles. The one thing you learn very quickly after surviving here.

Sociopaths need to show you about what they do.

Alphas need to teach you about what they do.

There’s a difference between disliking those four character traits and some of the vitriol that has come into this thread.

I think the reason for the vitriol you reference is the increasing emphasis on conservation and stewardship we see in the hunting community today, and the fact that this dude's behavior is anathema to people who genuinely care about the animals they hunt. I can't speak for everyone, but I feel like the more you care about responsibly using the resource, the more it pisses you off to watch this guy take a 700 yard shot on the wrong animal only to parade it around the internet for personal financial gain... and the more you enjoy knowing that he is frying.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

I really wish the bigger names in the industry would pic one douche bag insta- famous ,egomaniac, narcissistic psycho per month out of the crop and bury their reputation like they deserve. We have too many bad names out there threatening our way of life, conservation, ethics, etc. They influence younger future douche bags to be even more douchey. We are far too easy on them, I couldnt watch more than 30 seconds of his vids.

He got caught on the same property , he knew full well where he was. Cross reference landownership records before you attempt to hunt a grey area. Lots of folks take the time to get to know for sure where they are hunting.
We compare many maps and tax office records if we're wondering at all about private and public land boundaries.
If he had a legitimate excuse to be on the wrong ground he would have been given some latitude.
May be you should read the court docs, looks like lots of posters here have.

I work in real estate and you are correct about one aspect, land ownership is changing all the time and OnX and other similar services can't update that frequently so they are frequently outdated. I bought a parcel over 2 years ago and OnX still shows it under the previous landowners name.

All that said, land doesn't change from public to private nearly as often, though it does happen in occasion. It doesn't really matter if I own it or Joe Blow owns it, if you don't have written permission to hunt private land you can't legally hunt it. OnX is going to let you know it's not public so even if the ownership is outdated you'll still know it's private land.

Yup, and if there's any question, don't risk it.

Mistakes happen, if you make a mistake and accidentally trespass and get caught then own up to it, don't try to hide it and definitely don't do it again

When I was in college, a fella at a local fly shop told me about pretty nice trout stream. What he didn’t tell me was about the pass it required for access. My buddy and I fished for a few hours and stopped to eat. Game warden checked us and we had all the right licenses, right gear, barbless single hooks, etc...except the pass. We apologized, said we understood, and would leave, but he said wasn’t going to ruin the day for us. He wrote us both passes for the remainder of the day and even a few recommendations for what flies to use. Cost us both $50, but no harm no foul.

So yeah, things can happen.

And don’t use dry flies when they are killing olive bead headed nymphs.

There’s a comment on the video saying in Utah you need hunters orange. There are 16 likes to the comment and Muley Freak responds to the comment and ignores the portion about hunter orange. Somebody turn the d bag in for another violation.

Edit: what’s the most efficient and effective way to turn in a hunter violation in Utah? If someone doesn’t volunteer (hopefully someone more familiar with Utah will), then I’ll make the call.

Edit: report made.
I literally posted the hunters orange requirements as a comment in that video. Oddly enough, that comment no longer exists 🤨🤨🤨

I took a look at his IG. First of all, I would never follow this page on social media. The name alone is stupid. Anyway, he has 195,000 IG followers but many of his pics have only 1,000 likes or less. Top performing pics have 2-3,000 likes and most have less than 10 comments with many only have 2-3.
You telling me a dude with 200,000 followers only gets a 1% reach? For comparison, I looked at a pro skier’s IG Page who had 155,000 followers. Most of her pics have 10,000+ likes and 200-300 comments, which is what you would expect for that number of followers.

Conclusion: this guy paid money, and probably a good amount of it, to fluff his social media numbers with a spam account following. Pathetic. But then again, his brand name is Muley freak, so what did I expect?
