Came back early from a successful deer hunt in the Bob, and got a call that I was 16th in the draw the 15 ewe tags in 301 (Spanish Peaks), and when someone turned their tag back in I was next in line. So now I'm hunting sheep in Montana for the third year in a row.
Based on a bit of hasty research it seems that the sheep hang out pretty high and far back. All five ram tags last year were filled in November, most of those rather late in the month. I'm assuming the ewes will be separate from the older rams until the rut, and high but quite as high. So the usual hiking and glassing gig in the sub-alpine will be the order of the day. Needless to say I am very happy.
I have a call in to the biologist, and would appreciate any thoughts or sheep sightings. Had I known earlier I would have scouted, but as is I'll likely be going in a week or two from now, having never before been in the area.
