MRE’s ?

Packed MREs on my first hunt and I'd say the only pro is you can eat them instantly if you don't mind cold food. They take up a lot of room if you plan on three meals a day and I'll second they aren't light weight

If you take them you will want to break them down before packing, do not pack as they come. Ditch the stuff you do not want. This will take up much less space.

Chew the gum. Laxative. Or some SGM will make you smoke until you “go”. Chewing tobacco works too

There are cheaper and better commercial options.

Gotta field strip the heck out of them. I ditched the heaters and just kept them in chest pocket under clothing. Got hot enough even when cold out.

If you are going to pack a stove, I would definitely go with freeze dried. I used some peak refuel meals last year and they were awesome, much better than mountain house. I ate MRE’s almost exclusively for 3 months of my life and really don’t want to eat one again. Almost any of the freeze dried meals beat MRE’s for taste.

Just stay away from the omelette. That aside, MREs are funny. Some are good cold, some warmed up, and others are only good if thoroughly heated.

I like them for horse back and floating.

there are entre options you can get at the grocery that you can heat in hot water.

the heater may give you trouble over 10,000.ft

They are a hell of a lot better than when I was eating them back in the day. Heavy though. They come on at 1 to 1.5# unstripped each. If you strip them down to the essentials you can get it to # or less each. Still relatively heavy for long trips. You can make it work but for more than 2-3 it is going to be a lot of weight. Consider 1 or 2x a day and other food for breakfast and lunch.

Also, they aren’t cheap. Depending on how you are sourcing them, commercial freeze dried or regular food can be cheaper.

Guess I'm an exception, but I really like MRE's. Everything is in one pouch so you don't worry about forgetting fork, etc. To me the taste is no better or worse than Mtn. House. Biggest benefit in grizzly country is you can burn everything up so no lingering food scent. I've not backpacked with them, but seems to me for 2 or 3 days, the negatives aren't significant.

I like MREs, but I strip them down because they don't pack well and a lot of the stuff in there you wont need. I only need 2 a day because theres quite a bit of food in them. If you were going longer I would look at something else.

As others have said; they are heavy and do nothing good for your gastric situation. We used them for several years when I was younger, on horse packing trips because my buddy’s dad was a retired colonel and brought them. There are so many better options. Even though they cost us zero dollars, it was barely worth it. There are lots of better options; backpacking food, and DIY. But use MREs as a last resort. If guys in the military I had another option I guarantee you they Would take it.

They're convenient but they're heavy, contain lots of packaging, and I'm not a huge fan of the flavor choices. I don't complain when I'm forced to eat them for work, but I never go out of my way to eat them.

They're excessively high in sodium and low in fiber, hence the warning about gastrointestinal stoppages. The gum is just Chiclets, so not a magical cure. Coffee and nicotine is always a good solution, though.
