Im going to be backpacking Elk hunting in September. 3 pairs of camo, under layers, sleeping bag, tent, bow strapped to the back, some MRE style food, sawyer water system, hunting accessories, light cooking stuff (going with 2 other people they might carry that), and some other hunting equipment and hygiene equipment. I like the idea of a smaller pack. I would be in the woods 4-5 days at most. I tend to pack lighter. This is for early season bow. Would a saw tooth be okay or should I get the metcalf? I really prefer smaller lighter bag, but dont want to not have enough room…

Also im hearing that the Metcalf bag can squeak and when I called mystery ranch they said the sawtooth has a different frame and that wasnt a problem. I can get the saw tooth for $380 new and the Metcalf for $250 used

There are new versions of both packs. Are you looking at Camofire?
I’d do a little more research, I get the impression even the new line up is squeaky from a few posts here. I like MR packs. But, you would think they would have the squeak killed by now
New metcalf is still on the old guide light frame according to the MR site.

I carry a MR Terra frame 65 for all around backpacking and hunting. It expands or compresses to suit capacity needs. It utilizes the guide light frame. 65 is plenty big for your intended use provided you pack your kit efficiently. I think the metcalf is similar except for maybe the pockets. Pluses for this pack are two side/back pockets and two lower side pockets for water bottle access or gun butt support. And a lid provides good easy to access organization. It carries weight extremely well the way the hip belt to frame interfaces. MR utilizes a very durable yet relatively lightweight cordura fabric. The buckles and straps are extremely functional and well thought out. For my pack and the Metcalf one huge plus is the pack stands up in its own the way the waist belt is designed. I’ve never had another pack that does that. IMG_0218.jpegMinuses are it weighs nearly 6 lbs. yes my frame creaks at times. Saturating those areas with spray silicone has helped. For the price and overall quality and features and also for the load carrying ability you can’t go wrong with either. IMO. It’s ridiculous to spend $600-$700 for a backpack that you might use a couple times a year.
