Tikka bonded pic rail or direct mount rings?

Im not concerned with weights, scope length mounting issues, etc, etc.
Im strictly approaching this from a robustness, equipment failure standpoint.

Which option provides a truly better/stronger system?

Feel free to chime in with experiences good or bad with each system. I have always gravitate toward a permanently bonded rail system but im entertaining the thought of Tikka direct rings on a lightweight build. Though its not much of a concern with the SRS rail.

I was slow to come around but now love integral dovetail rings. UM and Sportsmatch
I have about 1/2 bonded pic and the others UM or To84s.

Interestingly there’s no weight savings with the UM rings - they weigh 2 grams more than a 20moa steel rail w/ recoil lug and nightforce 0.850 ultralights if you use the SRS Rail that is trimmed you’ll save weight over the UM dovetails and still have recoil pins.

I’ve not had either fail

I believe 3/4 of my tikka’s are bonded rails at the time couldn’t find sportsmatch rings that I needed and didn’t know about UM rings, they have all been solid, one is sporting sports match also solid

Im not wound up. My question was directed towards the difference between "UM Tikka rings" and "bonded rails" that essentially has nothing to do with direct mount talley rings. As always is the case, hard to convey emotion through text. I assure you I am breathing just fine

I appreciate your insight. I hope you didn't take my reply as condescending. Im specifically asking for anyone that has a comparison between UM tikka rings and bonded rails. Good or bad. Thank you though

I have both. I prefer the UM rings for the running a smaller objective scope lower. The thread about their pins bending and needing more torque on the cross bolts than UM states is a little concerning.

There’s a lot of very good direct mount scope systems for Tikka… Unknown Munitions & Sportsmatch jump to mind. I’ve been developing a one piece, direct mount system for five or six years that direct mounts using custom 17-4 H900 shoulder bolts (in order to make the screws as strong as possible). Then we use two tapered screws (also 17-4) that go into the 3mm holes in the top of the receiver. In order for the mount to move, it needs to sheer 4 very strong shoulder bolts and sheer solid 3mm diameter 17-4 pins. I’ve been designing and building scope rings for a variety of customers for about 20 years & this is the best system for me… emphasis on the last two words

I like the design of your system. I do not like the fact that the bubble level is centered. Its a deal breaker for me if I have to come out of the scope or move at all to check level. For that reason, offset only, and preferably near the action. Just a personal preference. I didn't see weights listed on your site? May want to consider adding some for interested buyers!

That thread alone is reason for mg concern. I have always gravitated towards bonded pic rail but was considering UM direct mounts for this rifle. Have them on the wife's gun, but that rarely sees any abuse or hard use.

Originally I wanted to be able to remove the rings, shoot a thermal scope for coyotes. Then maintain zero when I put the daytime scope back on. I liked the simplicity of the 1/2” crossbolt on the NF rings.

In truth, the thermal just lives on a dedicated gun.

I prefer bonded rails. Easier to pull the scope and swap things around. My UM rings and some Sportsmatch rings are sitting in a drawer.

Both work great. If either are setup/done correctly you will have nearly zero durability issues even in heavy use.

Regarding the Talleys, just say no, and the only extra “breathing” you’ll be doing is a sigh of relief

Didn’t they have some disclaimer on the UM rings that they are for use above some moderate magnum cartridge level of recoil?

Most mine are sportsmatch or UM rings but I’d think a bonded rail and pic rings would be more robust. I like the ease of swapping scopes around with a pic rail too.

Im a rail guy. I hunt alot at night for predators, being able to mount a night optic is a factor, as well as being able to mount my supresors. If I was buying say a 7 mag for just backpack hunting, maybe if be a ring guy. But my 6.5cm upr does steel at 1,000 then coyote in the dark...

What's the weight on Tikka Medium rail/ring setup?
