Moving to AZ

So just found out I’m moving from northwest Colorado to Globe, AZ for work at the end of June. I know a bit about the area. Like it’s hot in the summer and winters are mild, globe is a mining town, and that I can hunt in AZ.

So for those from AZ or those who hunt AZ is there anything I should know in general about hunting in Arizona? I already put in my non resident App for deer in 24a just because that will be close to home. I already started research on draw odds. I know it won’t be as easy to get an elk tag anymore. But I see there’s OTC archery deer tags.

Anything anyone wants to share about AZ would be appreciated.

I’m going to follow this thread closely. I’m retiring from the Army soonish and moving to Phoenix for my next job. I’ve never hunted in Arizona so it’ll be a change for me. Hope to get some good tips.

Globe Area has some good hunting. The Pinal mountains have pines on top and quite a good deer population. The area between the Pinals and Winkleman holds some great whitetail and mule deer. Globe is also right next to the San Carlos indian reservation. Some of the best hunting in the state but you will have to pay for it.

You are also not too far from units 1 and 27 which arguably have some of the best elk hunting in the state. Roosevelt and Apache lake have great fishing as well as the the Black river.

Ill throw this out there for a more specific question as well. Are AZ state trust lands open to hunting? My OnX maps says restricted access on all the state lands. Here in CO some state land is open and some isn’t.

Welcome to AZ Northpark. I'm a lifelong resident of AZ and am familiar with the Globe area. I was born in Morenci, another mining town east of Globe and raised along the eastern border in the towns of Morenci/Clifton/Alpine and now currently am semi-retired back in Alpine on ranch property my parents purchased and lived on starting back in the 50's. I have lived/worked/hunted all over the state, including living a few years on the western border at Parker Dam, also Flagstaff, Williams, Bagdad, Seligman, and 30 long hot years in Phoenix.
The Globe area is nice and though it gets hot its not like Phoenix/Tucson. Small mining town. Maybe a little cliqe.-ish but most small town AZ people are friendly. I live in unit 27 which is one of the best hunting units in AZ and since New Mexico is 3 miles from my house I hunt the western units there also.

Most state trust land is open to hunting. Your hunting license is your permit to access STL. There are rare occasions where some STL is closed to hunting, sometimes temporary closures, but I’d say 99% is open. Been hunting Arizona all my life and have yet to run into closed STL.

It's only two hours North from Globe to Show Low, and the Mogollon Rim runs for a long way in both directions from there. Lots of great hunting and fishing opportunity!

Most state trust land is open to hunting. Your hunting license is your permit to access STL. There are rare occasions where some STL is closed to hunting, sometimes temporary closures, but I’d say 99% is open. Been hunting Arizona all my life and have yet to run into closed STL.

This is what I’ve found as well being an Arizona native. Also remember that state trust is closed to target shooting. They’re really cracking down on this lately.

Hey all, we are settling in nicely here. Archery season was a blast. Didn’t shoot anything but saw lots of good bucks. Now I’m just waiting for spring bear. Think I’ve decided I need to focus on a black bear til I shoot one. Killed plenty of elk, antelope, deer, etc. but never a bear.

I killed my first black bear this past fall and I'm hooked. Beware, it's addicting and I obsess over bears now more than any other animal I've ever hunted in the past.

They are! Your hunting license is permission to hunt on them. A majority of my hunting is state trust land.
