Mouse Prevention in outbuildings

I haven't round anything that really works. Some say cinnamon, some say cayenne, Irish spring dish soap... I've tried a lot. Only thing that has worked for me is sealing it up. Steel wool in every hole, with spray foam or pl400 subfloor adhesive to hold it in place. They make a rodent repellent spray foam, but I'd still use steel wool.
This is the way.
I have a friend who repairs RV's for a living. Most of his spring season is repairing rodent damage to wiring and the like. He has had folks try EVERYTHING and nothing works very well or for very long except preventing their entry in the first place.

Yep, I'll +1 the bucket trap. Also, I'd be lying if I said this guy's channel isn't a little addicting:

One of the things to keep in mind with most mice, is they can breed year-round, but are especially active in the spring and fall. One of the best things you can do with rodents or any kind of pestilence, is to be killing them intensely before they produce litters - it has an outsized effect in knocking down the overall populations across the rest of the year. You hit ground squirrels in the late winter right when they're starting to come out of their dens, you'll see dramatically fewer in the spring, summer, and fall. Same with flies - having traps out just as the freezes end keeps the populations down to fractions of what you normally see throughout the year, if you have enough traps out.

Traps and peanut butter, Fresh Cab, bait stations and several Mouse Blocker Pro is what I use all the time but if I get lazy on the kill traps and don’t keep the bait station filled a pack rat always seems to show up in the garage after a few weeks. My big Class A diesel pusher is parked at the edge of the range and doing all this has kept it free of mice and pack rats for 6 years now.

We got 2 cats at the last house after traps, etc couldn’t keep up. They solved the problem quick and the kids love them 🤷‍♂️. We had 2 shops and would just put the cats in one and outside and it did the trick for both shops and the house.

Put a radio out there and keep it on. Mice don’t like that.

I’ve also used these. Work good

I went through about 5# of this over the winter.. I was finding green turds... So it might have been working on some and not other other. I'll probably jsut keep the antifreeze dishes out there and maybe a couple bucket traps for summertime/fall

I used to have an egg business on my small farm, with a flock of about 200 free-range chickens. One year, we had a terrible rat problem in the area. I got several 6 inch PVC pipes and cut a small access hole in the middle so I could fix a poison bar in the pipe. Pipe was long enough so the chickens couldn't get at the bait, but it worked very well on the rats. I think the same setup could be developed for mice.

The peanut butter bucket of doom kills 1-4 mice, squirrels, chipmunks, rats, etc. every night in my tack room.

Zero cost setup and refill.

I’m tellin ya…

+1 to the cat idea. I live in the interior of Alaska and mice or voles are an absolute plague. Tried most of the non cat methods listed above and nothing really worked.

Finally got a cat and she started cleaning up the problem a bit. Got a second cat and death is her profession. That cat is a straight up killer. She will sit at the the mice entry points for hours, just waiting. It is normal for me to wake up in the morning and she is still batting her latest trophy across the floor, committing heinous acts of violence against it.
Mouse problem has degraded exponentially, so either she has killed most of them or they are just scared now and know death lurks around the corner.

These two items right here are by far the best I've used for mouse deterrents. Open the odor eliminator(it's some kind of gel)and poke it with a fork a bunch of times. Then pour the liquid Irish Spring over it. I let these sit in random spots on the floor of my cabin. I feel like I've tried everything over the years, but since I started using these the mice have almost totally disappeared.

Chicks did the same to me the first time I tried Axe body wash. #neveragain.

And dogs like the taste of tomcat,if they ever eat it start giving them a table spoon of peroxide until they throw up and then get a coagulant shot.I use bucket traps and sticky pads

The only poison I’ve found that really works is the stuff you have to sign your name for at the feed store. I don’t know what it’s called but it’s green kibble like a dog food. Only put it where your domestic animals have 0 access to. And you need cats. I don’t like that they kill baby rabbits and stuff but it’s a necessary evil when living in the woods.
