What is the most economical way to get a 22 CM rifle? I am looking hard at the horizion rifles but I think I can pick up a tikka t3 .223 for about $700.

next step would be to have it reemed out or rebarreled?
who would one use for the job?

thanks

Tikka 223 or 22-250 with the 8 twist barrels. Have it rechambered to 22 Creed by a good smith.

1:8 22/250 and rechamber is probably the cheapest route.

Check here for likely best price a I’ve heard the shipping can be kinda slow though.

Who would you use for a rechamber? Out here in west tx we don’t have many up to date gunsmiths 🤣

Go to your local shop and look for used Tikkas. I do this a few times a year at local shops and can find “used” tikkas that are barely even used.

You can also find a lot of the “premium” model tikkas as they are popular candidate for banquet and local foundation give aways. They are guns for hundreds of dollars off.

What are you trying to achieve by going to the 22cm is the question? Can buy a 1:8 tikka and rent a $40 uni-throater to add some freebore and seat 80gr eldm or 85.5 Berger at the boat tail bearing surface junction at the neck shoulder and only be ~200fps short in velocity. Shoot the barrel out then buy a prefit 22cm. Now if you said for brass availability, that’s well justified. This is your most economical 22cm in my opinion, although not the same, it’s close enough for gov’t work

Tell me more about this uni-throater? I assume you were talking about a 22-250 and then pushing the throat out further. What equipment do you need to use this uni- throater? Where can they be found?

Yeah exactly, made by ptg, I think they’re 250-300 if you want to buy one. $39 to rent you get it for a week. Pick your desired bullet and where you want to seat it. Then hand cut the throat with the reamer, comes with everything you need. There are good YouTube videos, I have one I’m about to do and was thinking about doing a post for a “poor man’s 22cm”, or at least that’s what I deam it

Left is 55 max for my rem 788 max for mag, middle would be max length in a factory tikka throat 2.598”. Right is 88eldm with boat tail bearing surface junction at neck/shoulder, 2.741” comfortably fit in tikka mag

There is absolutely no need to jack with a T3x 22-250 chamber. 88s fit perfectly fine in an “M” magazine with room to spare in the mag. 2.66” COAL is still jumping in mine and takes up little to no room in the powder column of the case.

IMO you’re going to run into pressure way before you run out of room. IMG_3157.jpeg

Interesting, mine was not that long, agreed that the mags are adequate. I’ll measure this next one of my buddies when i get it. Although, extending the throat does help decrease pressure if I’m not mistaken?

Perhaps they changed tooling and/or reamer dimensions when they started making more 1-8”s?

I suppose extending the throat could garner a small amount of additional velocity but I’d say in a factory barrel you’re chasing diminishing returns… if you were spec’ing a custom barrel for no added cost it might make sense. Then again, leaving room in the mag to chase your lands through the life of the barrel also makes sense.

Yeah that’s what I’m thinking. Just measured one that was purchased last month and coal on an 88eldm was 2.664, similar to what you’re seeing? In this case I certainly agree there probably isn’t a lot to gain with cutting the throat deeper I. This case, I’ll have to play with case volume but maybe get a grain or two extra of a slow burning powder like n560 in there? I’m going to play around with it in the next month

Yes very similar, If I recall I’m kissing lands at 2.665 or something like that, and shot best at 2.650”.

I tried some 7828ssc and velocities were pretty low, accuracy was decent. I saw much better velocity with H4350 and RL-17 so I stopped there.
