Moose/Elk/Caribou/Brown Bear Custom Rifle

I’ll say it….

That is the LAST thing I would wade into the alders with after a bear.

I 300 RUM’d a lotta critters. My latest grizzly rifle is a Kimber Montana 22 Creed with 88’s.

Bullets matter. Pick the bullet and impact velocity , then choose a cartridge that will achieve that.
Can you post pics of the grizz you shot with that rifle?

Certainly will after I kill one. Tends to be more hunting than killing when it comes to grizzlies…

Funny thing, when you’ve lived/worked/hunted/recreated for multiple decades in grizz country, grizzlies cease to be the boogeyman and become just another animal like anything else.

I’ve been reading about burning out barrels. For the average hunter that only goes once a year and puts 20-50 rounds through the gun a year, how big of a concern should that be? How many shots typically burn out the barrels from everyone’s experience?

For someone who shoots 50 rounds a year, 30 years on something that burns out barrels fast like a 22 Creed. Stretch that to 100 years on a 308 win.

As a general rule of thumb, the guys who worry about burning out a barrel, aren’t the guys who burn out barrels.

So what does everyone think about this setup? I like the idea of having two barrels for one gun. I'm a little concerned about the weight for hunting. Thoughts?

  • Best overall recommendation: Zermätt TL3 or SR3 action + TriggerTech Diamond + Proof CF prefit 280 AI (cerakote) + Zermätt Matterhorn.
  • Expected carry weight: about 10–11 lb bare, ~11–12.5 lb scoped, depending on exact barrel length and optic.

I would do exactly what I am in the process of doing. Find a Win 70 action with the older style trigger and send it to Brown Precision and have him build you a 338 Win Mag Pro Hunter Elite rifle.
Don't like the 338 Win Mag? Then pick a different caliber but stick with Brown Precision and the Win 70 regardless.

How hard is it to find the ammo? I had never heard of them until now.

I order online and have never had a problem finding ammo. Hornady, Federal, Nosler all make ammunition for them. My current favorite is the Federal Premium 168gr bergers. My gun seems to prefer them the most. My son has the Savage UL in 280 AI and it is less picky. He shoots it all sub moa 5 shot groups

Idc what ppl say im not taking a 6um for a brown bear hunt. I had a gun built last year for basically the exact same hunt, Alaskan moose/bear. .300 rum, Manners, bartlein steel, r700. Not the lightest and its not a t3x but im not going into brown bear country without it. Topped with an nx8 it ran me $4200.View attachment 980439
Which camo pattern is that on the manners stock? I like it.

Thoughts? Since you asked, I think your nuts for wanting to carry a hunting rifle that weighs at least 11 pounds

My heaviest hunting rifle is 10.8# with optic, suppressor, and sling (.25-06). I carry it all day still hunting in the Appalachian mountains. I never think to myself, “gee, I wish this weighed more.” But I also find myself reaching for it more often than not because I love it.

Edit - but if I was hunting dangerous game, a long, heavy rifle like that would not be my first choice (even if it was in a heavier chambering than .25-06). I’m currently building a 9.3x62 with a 19” barrel (and a 7” suppressor) as my “fun” rifle.

For me, a great hunting setup is between 9 and 10 pounds. Closer to 10 for long action cartridges like .30-06 or 9.3x62. Closer to 9 for a short action cartridge like .308, 7mm08, 6.5 Cm, .243, etc. My only little light rifles are mini action cartridges (6.5 Grendel, .223) or .22 LR.

I have a 6.5 prc that weighs 11.5lbs all in, ammo, bipod, scope etc. its not awesome, but not that bad hauling it on backcountry hunts. I have done it several times. Just hit the gym, eat less and loose a couple LBs before the hunt.

Not a brown bear, but my once in a lifetime grizzly bear above the Arctic Circle in Alaska 2019. One shot at 158 yards broadside. Hit him tight behind the shoulder in the lungs and bullet exited opposite side tight behind the shoulder. He spun 180 degrees, did two somersaults, and never moved again. DRT.

I used a semi-custom Winchester Model 70 classic sporter with the controlled round feed action that my gunsmith put a barrel on, coated the metal, did magic on the trigger, and pillar & glass bedded it. I used ONE 140 gr. Nosler Accubond that I carefully handloaded. Muzzle velocity was 3186 fps.
